    When you find yourself in the business of having argyments about matters of fact with people coded as scientists, do not be surprised when you are met with secondhand disinformation, uncritical regurgitation of prejudice, abuse, and if you are very very lucky, flattery that you are a big-brain whose thoughts are not in the same universe and therefore require no engagement.

    To borrow a term from pedagogy, the point of designing a new programming language is to extract leverage from a threshold concept. Threshold concepts are so called because they are hard to learn. They require a shift in perspective, and it&#39;s that shift which makes things which previously looked hard actually become straightforward. Up becomes down. So turn things upside-down.

    In ask, a problem is presented as a present imperative (e.g., define or prove) until it has been solved, at which point the verb changes to a past passive (defined, proven). It occurs to me that the data declaration already fits this pattern, and what is now needed is an interactive mode of data type construction in which the problem begins da!

    Funky differential operators show up a lot in CS103, because I love them. In Sem 1, we do the forward difference operator for polynomials in one variable. In Sem 2, we do Brzozowski for regular expressions. None of these operators is quite the derivative they learned in school. And then on the test, I give them this thing prop Insertion ABC (List ABC) (RegEx ABC) where -- you can insert b *somewhere* into xs -- to get a string which p likes prove Insertion b xs p by Between as cs where...
