Infrastructure going down for maintenance. Wish me luck. Finally formalized an update procedure covering the variations over all my FreeBSD hosts, to be spun into a set of scripts at a later point.

Updates finished. Everything up again. I also finally deployed Anubis, which should protect against "AI" crawlers. Previously I was forced to enforce logins on my gitea instance, otherwise "AI" bots would just straight-up cook the CPU. "AI"-bros forced me to lock down access to the tech I develop for our commons and that still pisses me off to no end. Thanks to Anubis, it's all publicly available again. Doesn't seem to ge...

My journalism pet peeve: Teleconferencing has made interviews objectively worse. Interviews with shitty audio are now the norm and I fucking hate it.

Do I know anyone with (ideally active) #graffiti contacts in #Vienna? I'm explicitly *not* interested in the gentrification clusterfuck of legal graffiti-as-a-service crews. I'm interested in trying my hand at long exposures of pieces during their creation – specifically so that the writers aren't identifiable.

Just ordered a couple batteries for my new camera. Because of availability, sadly from Amazon. Accidentally clicked the confusingly labeled button that immediately subscribes you for a trial period to Prime (which would automatically be followed by a paid subscription). Cancelled that shit so fast the unsubscription mail arrived before the "Welcome to Prime" one. ¬_¬

Managed to scout out the petrochem thing yesterday. Only got one shot I actually like out of it, but the company owning it does outreach and tours, so I have some hope of gaining access *without* trespassing. :thounking:

Are third-party laptop cases a thing? I don't mean a hardcase with foam to put your laptop in, but like actual laptop bodies you can put components from other laptops in so maintenance isn't a complete clusterfuck… I just want a laptop that's 90s-levels chunky so I can actually maintain the damn thing without losing my sanity. I want easy keyboard replacement from the top, easy display replacement and screwless quick-access hatches for component slots like RAM and NICs.

Messed around a bit with Faust ( https://faust.grame.fr/ ) today. One neat thing is that applying an LFO onto anything is literally just multiplication – you can apply it to an arbitrary number of signals with just `:> _ * os.osc(lfo_freq)`.

Did my first excursion with the DSLR tonight. I apparently suck at focusing (no wonder, got pretty bad astigmatism) and I didn't really do much in terms of composition, but I managed to do proof-of-concept shots for a few things I wanted to do for nearly 30 years now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dka4mcVQ4mA Ah yes, another climate tipping point we might've already sailed past. What is it, the second? Third? I think at this point it's simply factual to make the case that eco-terrorism is morally good, at least from an utilitarian standpoint.

Chorus is a decent arcade space sim with a stellar soundtrack and the most stupidly pretentious writing I have ever witnessed. It's like a physical manifestation of what a westerner having an "epiphany" while backpacking in India is like. The protagonist literally kills billions of people before the game even starts.

Thunderdome is a criminally underrated concept and we should be bringing it back big-time. Messy social conflict in your hackerspace? Thunderdome! Beef with a colleague at work? Thunderdome! Political debates? Nah, bruh, just put them fuckers in the dome. Two politicians go in, one politician comes out – THUNDERDOME! \o/

Recently, I began retreading the #Gothic series. Played through the first game, finished the second one for the first time and am now at Gothic 3, finally having beaten that first fight (which isn't nearly as awful if you deactivate the gameplay "fixes" of the community patch). Then I went up the lighthouse in the starting village to take a look around and this starts playing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha4zdr1_ht8 If you listen closely, you can hear Kai Rosenk...

Gothic is kind of the Trespasser of RPGs. You know, the kind of game your average gamer never heard about but which inspired the developers behind a vast array of their favorite games. Without Gothic, we wouldn't have STALKER. More to the point, without Gothic, we wouldn't have The Witcher, the third installment of which is commonly argued to be *the* best RPG, period (tho I hear BG3 is giving it a fair run for its money these days).

There's like 10cm of snow outside of my window and that's more than I've seen in like 2 decades – are we sure the AMOC hasn't collapsed yet with this just being the first sign? :thaenkin:
