The team I manage is working very hard to complete revisions to an ethics application and smack it back over the net for the HREC to consider. We're all a bit tired and emotional. I just had to quietly correct a senior researcher's misspelling of her own name. ๐

I am preparing to move my PhD to a different university because I've hit 10 years on the first attempt and my current university isn't keen to support me to complete. I spent a sunny but freezing afternoon hunched over my keyboard bashing out a Research Proposal document to submit to the new university and I think it broadly makes sense!!! YOOO it is so good to 'have my brain back' after nearly a decade lost to mental illness, ineffective treatment, undiagnosed ADHD, the pandem...

Friends, my lovely friend Ann had a fall and bonked a facial nerve causing facial palsy. Does anyone know a facial nerve specialist?

The nurse in the stall next to mine is prepping an elderly Chinese man for discharge and I could hear he was cussing her OUT in a Chinese language.

Dripped and nil by mouth for exploratory surgery since you can't get a ultrasound on a Sunday at RPA.

Ok, heading for discharge. They want to keep me overnight but I'll wind up manic if I spend the whole night in ED.

Back to ED this morning but it's just for confirmatory ultrasound.

Six years since one of my closest friends died in hospital and I lost it crying on my way into the hospital. The absolute last place I want to be right now.

Ok I'm almost done. Kidney infection with downstairs involvement (owie). Ultrasound done and I'm just waiting for doc review. Cannot believe how sick it made me.

Nope, just been admitted. Not sure why. The adventure continues. At least I'm not in ED waiting room.

Hey friends, if you work in health communication or building community around sexual and reproductive health with trans and gender diverse people, please consider attending this vital seminar on how TGD folks experience menopause. https://mailchi.mp/unsw/seminar-24-oct-10599485

Filing this away as a very elegant example of how to reframe your negative findings as a positive contribution to knowledge. This study set out to test whether cognitive restructuring โ a PTSD treatment modality โ *changed* patterns of activation in a particular network of neural centres measured using fancy MRI (fMRI) methods. They found it did not! But a negative result never holds a good scientist down โ instead they reported the study as if it were observational from the beginning, reporti...

Oops. Another black eye for the microplastics-are-everywhere crowd: turns out standard latex and nitrile lab gloves shed stearates that show up as plastics on all but the most sensitive of tests. And this follows on from revelations that studies purporting to show microplastics found everywhere from the brain to the testes didn't calibrate their setups using standard reference materials, so we have no idea if the signal they picked up is actually true or false detection of plastic materi...
