"$40A0: No evidence has been found that this register does or does not exist. It is possible that it is a write-only register that is not used by any known Famicom Network System card. No reads or writes to this register were ever observed to have any effect. However, its apparent absence is suspicious enough to have this placeholder here."When the NESdev wiki reads like the SCP Foundation wiki or a text adventure.

There's a "hardcore gamer online" stereotype according to which, if you play a game in easy mode, you're not a true gamer to them. I'm now starting to wonder if this started as a Touhou Project meme. In 2007, IOSYS's Flash videos went viral online. Overdrive had a meme with Reisen and Tewi saying: easy mode, how lame! It instantly became a must-post gaming meme on 4chan for years (the IOSYS meme itself was a SFW and Touhou-fied version of 2ch's "virgin insult&q...

Speaking of redundant bootloader features, where is the plug-and-play universal Linux bootloader distro? There should be a Linux distro dedicated for booting. There's LinuxBoot, but its focus is firmware customization, not easy net/multibooting. A "bootloader distro" would ship you a initramfs (or a Unified Kernel Image) as your second-stage bootloader, with its own GRUB-like boot menu and iPXE-like script engine. It would replace nearly all bootloader drivers, and would enable ver...

Every PC hardware reviewer complains about "SSD is running out of pSLC cache" after writing a few GiBs of data. But it's a pointless exercise unless you are write-heavy (e.g. when you're a YouTuber with 4K videos). Meanwhile, nobody talks about low-depth IOPS. Where are the Windows Update, tar -xf chromium.tar.gz, and npm install simulations? Better, try resilvering a super fragmented RAID-Z2 using an old version of OpenZFS without the sequential resilvering patch.

If you ask about any performance problem online, as in "Why is my disk/network/filesystem so slow?" In 9/10 posts, you'd be told that "You must enable/use Y for high performance." or "Your system is slow because your hardware really is that slow." Sometimes from veteran sysadmins. Often these answers are completely wrong. There's actually a hidden slow-path or config knob somewhere - but sometimes it needs 10 fresh OS reinstalls and a kernel profiler to find...

NFS version 3 protocol servers must be able to recover without data loss from multiple power failures (including cascading power failures, that is, several power failures in quick succession), operating system failures, and hardware failure of components other than the storage medium itself (for example, disk, nonvolatile RAM).TIL If your file server is too unstable, it's technically an RFC violation.

The community should create a MusicBrainz for computer peripherals. You buy a product, add its barcode, PCB photos, revisions, part numbers, VID/PID to the database. How many times have you purchased multiple USB Hubs or card readers due to stability issues, before realizing that they are powered by the same controller... As a bonus, accept packaging photos to archive their artworks as well.

Modern computing be like: the hardware (Wi-Fi, Ethernet, etc) may work perfectly well, but it crashes randomly due to a driver issue and since no engineer from the silicon vendor is willing to look at a subtle race condition in the receive queue during DMA transactions, it's unusable and the only solution is to unplug the adapter for a new one.
