Muslim mayors in major #US and #European cities being visibly pro #trans and #LGBTQ rights is quite a contrast from what you see from #Muslim politicians and leaders in #SouthAsia and #SoutheastAsia.

Only in #Japan - the government and a company both respond to my requests for interviews/comments, but the leading local environmental group on this topic? Nope...too "busy"

With the crisis along the Strait of Hormuz choking off global oil supplies, #Biofuels are making a comeback. But are they a climate-friendly solution? My new deep dive unpacks why betting on bioenergy might just accelerate #climatechange. https://www.semafor.com/article/04/23/2026/why-biofuels-are-back

During an interview, a #Japanese expert noted that it was a major shock to the economy when #Sharp was acquired by a #Chinese company. Except, it wasn't Chinese. It was #taiwanese From their perspective, it didn't matter - but from my perspective, it's dramatically different. #Taiwan #Japan #China

Allergies are costing #Japan $1.6 billion a day in lost productivity & 43% of the population now suffers from severe hay fever. The cause: mass planting of cedar & cypress decades ago. In my latest for @bbcfuture, I explore efforts to replace plantations w/ biodiverse ecosystems https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260515-the-1950s-blunder-which-causes-mass-hay-fever-in-japan

Read about my one-time home, #Jakarta, and how it’s transformed from the world’s most congested city into a transit success that provides nearly 90% of its residents with mass transit access. But, as my recent reporting points out, there’s still a long way to go. https://indevelopmentmag.com/jakarta-transit-transformation/ #transit #Indonesia #Jakarta #MRT

My #creditunion just sent a notification about a big change - once that I am against. But the only way to vote against it - show up to an in-person meeting in a week on the other side of the world. I've already moved most of my money to another credit union, time to close that account. #coop

I had to ask an intermediary to get in touch with a #Philippines #laborunion to get photos to share with their global affiliates. This was after they ignored (or didn't see) all my emails. Entire process took 10 days. Of course, no captions, wonder how long it will take me to get those...

Met & know many western #Japan experts who are surprisingly ignorant about #Taiwan, the country that #Japanese are most likely to travel to. Surprised to learn the same can be said about western #Taiwan and Taiwan-based #China experts - many I met haven't ever been to Japan. Doesn't apply at all to #Japanese and #Taiwanese experts at all.

Does clearing forests in places like #Papua #Indonesia, or clearing grasslands in #Cerrado #Brazil actually help create “sustainable” transport fuel? The ecological consequences often outweigh any tailpipe emission savings. For Semafor, I explore the massive risks and hidden costs of #BigOil’s aggressive pivot to #Biofuels. https://www.semafor.com/article/04/23/2026/why-biofuels-are-back

I've tested and confirmed - it's cheaper & more fun to visit #Taipei or #Seoul from #Kansai than #Tokyo. Helps that I know more people in both cities too, and both have much more vibrant international journalism & NGO communities. Kinda don't see the point in going to Tokyo anymore. If I want to travel in Japan, lots of other places I'd rather go.

Wonder if this #webinar will mention #China's imperialism and its links to environmental justice in #Asia? Judging from the panel, and the organizers, I doubt it...but thinking to join just to ask about it. https://foeasiapacific.org/2026/05/19/webinar-environmental-justice-and-resisting-imperialism-in-the-asia-pacific/

What an argument. #China, which produces solar panels partly through exploitation of #Uyghurs and their homeland's natural resources, can somehow support the #green transition in a region where #Indonesia is exploiting #Papuans and their resources. Another way to put this - #Chinese cheap panels, produced via colonial exploitation, and help Indonesia further its colonial exploitation in #WestPapua How is this desirable in any way? https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/china-s...

Really shocking. Comes a few days after #Zambia signed a cooperation agreement with #China and some are wondering if PRC pressure led to this happening. It was a big effort to bring this conference (which was in #Taiwan last year) to #Africa, and I feel for organizers who had to cancel at the last minute. Sad state for #humanrights right now all around the world. https://www.404media.co/rightscon-human-rights-conference-suddenly-postponed/

I'm not going to be impressed with your #google workplace skills, or your use of #canva, or any #socialmedia app. If one, just one applicant, mentioned their open source or #selfhosting skills, that would be a ticket to an immediate interview.

RE: https://mstdn.social/@globalvoices/116049009777708678 Pay attention to how many so-called #China experts have said nothing about Lai's unjust sentencing - or the many others in #HongKong who have been jailed just for expressing their political rights. Too many of them stay silent for a variety of reasons - visits, or partnerships, or perhaps, I wonder, funding. We need to call them out more.
