“It’s legal in the US for 14 year olds to have paid jobs” is not remotely a new phenomenon. I just keep seeing people actively make things up about what the laws were before, and what they will be under these new bills. Which isn’t the same as saying I support the new bills - just that it feels like a big portion of “my team” is lying or else doesn’t know what they’re talking about

is there a way to block a username across all instances, rather than block a particular user on one instance, or a whole instance? I've gotten ten "follows" from the same spam account duplicated across random instances, always with the same username #mastodon #fediverse #mastodonhelp

I am sure this serves some important purpose, but the number of apps that have turned the "x" button in the upper right hand corner into basically the equivalent of "double extra minimize" is very annoying - having to go manually end the process in task manager if I *actually* want to close an app is a pain

It’s still a live possibility that I’ll leave here for the new place at some point. I want full text search and quote tweets, and I want a number of specific twitter users who are not here but are going to the new place. Mastodon could be great, but the people who think Mastodon is already great make that seem unlikely. And if you’re one of those people, I’m glad you have a place that’s how you like it! And many of you wanted us new folks to leave all along, it’s seemed, so yay for you there

And with that, I have turned in what is certainly my last term paper of the semester and probably my last term paper ever. What a load off the shoulders.

The last three years have seen, I believe, a stratospheric increase in the use of a rhetorical position that has always been unfortunately common on the internet (and, I suppose, elsewhere.) “The only reasons anyone could disagree with my position on this topic are mental or moral deficiency.” There are plenty of specific toxic behaviors that are less common here than elsewhere. But decentralization does nothing to reduce this particular dehumanizing and dispiriting trend - it’s worse here.
