Gorgeous example of Northern Sámi writing by Lars Jacobsen Hætta, 1863. The accented mark that eventually morphed into the caron was, from the start, something completely different. The second image shows Jens Andreas Friis’ spelling, which he developed in collaboration with – or informed by?
