Because doing the easy stuff is a thing in opposite-land, my book has smoothly transitioned from a realistic depiction of the Victoria Era to hard sci-fi with a lot of particular constraints, and I've discovered that it's literally impossible to overthink world-building in that genre - except to the point that you only think and never write. #amwriting #books

It's really irritating that now whenever I see an amusing cat video online the first thing I do is start looking for signs it was AI-generated. People who get that shit need to be wrapped in barbed wire and fired into the sun.

Very very long #travel post from the way-off-the-beaten-path side of things. My own experiences of being 21-22. And yes, I love running my own instance because to hell with the default character limit haha. Even if it's still not long enough. Here goes: You know how, at the end of Good Will Hunting, he's off to "go see about a girl?" I love that, and think young people absolutely should head off on adventures to go see about a person they've taken a fancy to. If you make i...

Started Abbott Elementary tonight, and the thing that just absolutely sent me (in a "you know somebody worked in schools" way) was when the lead character put "right-handed scissors" on her wish list. IYKYK #teachers

It's funny how people in the thick of it don't see why there's so much overlap between incel losers and #redpill asshats. It's like my dudes, you are being the worst kind of people in the world. Stop acting surprised that no woman wants to fuck you. You can either figure your shit out or go back to wanking off to your Joe Rogan or Tim Pool bullshit and blaming everyone else for your own inadequacies.

Three times a week I go to a place where I engage in pointless movements of various limbs and appendages, often with the forces of gravity or large objects impeding them. And I pay money for the experience. And afterwards, I'm tired as hell. The only hope here is that when it's time to engage in pointed movements of various limbs and appendages, they will be capable.

It turns out that if it's hot at night and you just got a book you're excited for that turns out to be really good, you should under no circumstances do what I did last night and go to bed early so you can read more. There's an important difference between reading for fifteen minutes before you drift off and reading for a couple hours and when it's time to drift off your mind says "no, this is an important plot point, I have to read it" and then it's 5am and you...

Wet bulb of around 33C (assuming the forecasted 40% humidity in the afternoon) and a heat index of around 160 degrees. This afternoon I went to take the dog out in the yard and there was a big pizza crust in the small water feature we have back there. This puzzled me - it was really unlikely that anybody would be throwing pizza crusts into our back yard and even less likely that they'd manage to land it in the water feature - high fences and hedges all around. Took the dog back out a few minutes ago and half the pizza crust is gone. I now believe with some certainty that it was a #crow as, well, that&am...

I figured this character dying a second time from a different perspective wouldn't be as emotionally taxing to write as the first time was. Wrong! 😢 On the other hand, finally able to explore some new parts of the story I've been thinking about for a while as I put off writing the part I just finished. 3500 words tonight. #amwriting

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@SwiftOnSecurity/116503270288837300 1992 was optimistic. Trying to get that kind of image quality off an acoustic coupler at 300 baud (if you had a very quiet room) would have taken hours.

Coworker is building a system that sits in front of kexec/shutdown/reboot/halt/etc systemd targets which calls a series of scripts out of /etc/prereboot.d/ in numerical order, so stuff like 10-service-that-has-to-drain, 20-other-service, 30-wait-for-dracut-to-finish, and so on. I could swear I've seen a system like this somewhere before, but all these years of systemd must have erased it from my memory. #sysadmin
