Does anyone have a favorite 100% offline dictation app for the Mac in the vein of Wispr Voice? I'd like to use this on a work computer, so offline is a requirement.

Due to life reasons, April was a tough one for my running goals for the year, but I’ve kicked it into gear in May.

I snarked about this earlier today, but Indigo is really rad. The auto-detection of the same person on different derives is really clever! https://apps.apple.com/us/app/indigo-for-bluesky-mastodon/id6763755310

I just think more people who say “I’m not racist or transphobic” should ask themselves why they only get loud about stuff like this when it’s black or trans people. https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:niws4datih6dforyd7y22km4/post/3mlrchljtzg2k

I don't know where this “liquid glass was designed for OLED” theory came from, but it's wild. I use macOS on OLED every day, and my issues are exactly the same as everyone else's. https://social.lol/@tylerhall/116570857503847995

We’re getting @tinystartapp and Raycast 2.0 in the same spring? It’s a great time to be a fan of launchers in macOS 😀

Vision Pro buyers! When did you last use it for more than installing a software update? (Just interested, not trying to start shit)

    1. I got literally these examples in my replies when I posted about this recently. It’s notable coordination in the “how would you like it…” reply guys. 2. Changing the race of actual people is not the same a changing fictional characters. It *can* be done when done with intention (Hamilton), but it’s rare IMO. 3. For some fictional chars, their race/gender is core to their story, but for many, they’re white because the default has been white forever. https://www.threads.com/@kolchak/post/DYa...

Gas is over $5, my groceries cost more than ever, and tech is getting astronomically expensive. Wasn’t the whole argument for putting the worst person in the world in charge was that he was going to fix these? They’re all worse than ever. I mean duh, but idiots thought this 🫠

I'm happy to announce ChapterPod, an app for adding chapters to podcast files, is now available to download! I've been using this for about 6 months behind the scenes to do all the chapters for Comfort Zone, and it's easily the best tool for the job (for me, at least). Available for Mac, iPad, and iPhone https://apps.apple.com/us/app/chapterpod/id6757309769

Man, AI browsers really didn’t work, huh? Nobody I know who is into AI in their workflows is using them, and if they are, they sure aren’t using the agentic modes. I will say, I so think there’s something there from an accessibility angle. Your browser doing things for you might not appeal to you or me, but I could see it being useful as an option for those with limited mobility or cognitive ability.

Okay then…I made a read later service called Quick Reads! It's out now, it has a 7-day free trial, and I think you'll like it ❤️ https://birchtree.me/blog/quick-reads-i-built-the-read-later-app-id-always-wanted/

Why did Quick Reads take longer to build than my other apps? Well, it’s kinda 7 apps 😵‍💫 Plus payments + auth + a bunch of other little things. I don’t care if this is a dud (it’s not so far!), I’m so proud I’ve been able to build something like this.

Here's a nice side effect of a bunch of developers falling irrationally in love with the MacBook Neo: performance optimization might be more front of mind. I'm working on a little personal app that works great on my M4 Pro, MBP. Yesterday, I built the project on the Neo and suddenly realized that the performance is not nearly good enough on that device. This has led me to dive deeper into what the bottlenecks are and how I can improve them, and now the app is just faster everywh...

I'm not the most heated liquid glass critic, but shit like this is why it riles people up so much. This is straight up barely-legible garbage.

Reaching the "just ship the damn thing" point with a big project. For someone with a bunch of apps out there, this one makes me more anxious than any of them for some reason.

My 14th micro-app is actually a skill, which can help you clean up your podcast and video transcripts. it includes memory of host names and proper nouns common in your show. Shout out to my "it's just fancy autocorrect" peeps…this is fancy auto-correct! https://birchtree.me/blog/micro-app-14-podcast-transcript-fixer/

RE: https://mastodon.social/@matt_birchler/116342002245903542 Saw The Format again this weekend in Denver, and this time had the iPhone Air with me. I still got a few good photos, but it really made me appreciate the difference in capabilities between this and the Pro. No raw, longer exposures, generally softer/painterly images, and waaaaaay worse zoom (I was meaningfully closer this time).

It’s amazing to me how many people still get confused by this. Also, Apple emails you a detailed receipt for each charge so you know exactly what you paid for. https://9to5mac.com/2026/04/02/eddy-cue-just-explained-why-apples-credit-card-charges-feel-so-random/
