I've been handling a reporting systems crisis all week, which is under control now but needs some detailed management until everyone's nerves are settled. Mysteriously all the people who have been demanding instant answers from me are today not replying to my updates. Ahhhh - there's a public holiday in SA on Monday. Urgency is relative.

The Odyssey. Not bad. Nolan caught between making a blockbuster and making an arthouse meditation on trauma. It sometimes feels like he's forcing two films into one. I think I prefer the scenes with Athena, Calypso and Tiresias, which describe the choices between remembering and forgetting the past and the future. The Sack of Troy is done 1000% better than that schlocky Troy movie.

It's expensive to be poor. * Sales tax is a disproportionate cost. * Economy of scale not available. * Fluctuation/increase in cost of living is a much greater risk than for financially secure people. * Investment is impossible, so rental housing is pure cost resulting in no asset. * Family support ('black tax', etc) is a massive cost for employed poor people who commonly spend a vast proportion of their income supporting unemployed family.

#Strava has customisable settings which let me set temperatures to Celsius and distances to kilometres. But it doesn&#39;t let me set the date format to #ISO8601 or, indeed, anything more sensible than American weirdness. Today Strava is telling me it&#39;s June. I mean what is this 5/6/2026 rubbish.

I&#39;m off to Ireland today until the weekend. See the offspring, congratulate them on goals reached, plot new goals. They are now autonomous adults, but I try not to remember that, mainly to prevent myself thinking of my own senescence 😹
