Sat on my balcony garden last night in my thickest wool jumper, listening to soft rain and birds sing, there was a nightingale in the choir of blackbirds for a little while. Air has been dusty and dry for so long, it was a pleasure at long last to breathe easy. A friend and I passed by the windows of some art studios earlier in the evening while it rained a lot, the rooms filled with people in black shirts and colourful beanies, they'd flung their windows wide open, and we admired their...

Testing KDE Connect between my KDE Plasma Linux and iOS this morning for file sharing. I can turn my phone into a remote controller now. Wish my next phone were from Jolla, I'd love to try Sailfish. Might have to settle for a smartless brick though, that's ok too. https://kdeconnect.kde.org

Campbell Walker (aka Struthless) from Australia made a beautiful video well grounded in media theory about replacing phone addiction with zine addiction last week, which is not what this is about. He mentions a 43-year-old book on communication as technology, Orality and literacy by Walter Ong, and I got incredibly excited about it because it describes oral and text-based communication technologies, and what are the pros and cons of each, and while Walker uses these beautifully to frame problem...

My friend is worried about the 3D model community they used to rely on for game and other projects being flooded with poorly made genAI assets, and they sent me a picture of a static human model that had one breast, two arms blending together into one hand, and three legs (two stacked on top of each other on one side) 🤔 I don't go there myself, but I can imagine how annoying and time-consuming it is to have to check for generative horrors when you're looking for something usefu...

The sun shines on my African violet, which I've had for three years almost exactly to the date since gran passed away. Next to it are propagations and a Mexican spiderwort I got from my friend a few years ago. No flowers yet in clivias or rose hibiscus or hoya. #Houseplants #PottedPlant #AfricanViolet

I make blackout poetry in the morning sometimes over coffee, it wires the brain nicely for the rest of the day. I have a broken and torn paperback for it I got from my local library for free. Recycled words. #Poetry #BlackoutPoetry

I received notice of a job vacancy in games retail over Easter. The entire ad smelled of particularly bad LLM, which is not surprising since Finnish language LLM products are far worse in quality than the English I’ve seen (possibly because LLM companies aren’t willing to go higher than 3€/hr for language trainers, and in a high living cost country like Finland it just isn’t enough to get by on.) Anyhow, I mentally red-penciled the job ad as a language exercise and then arrived at the end, with...

For the past two weeks I've mostly been afraid of doing anything because of all the horror stories of Finnish unemployment agencies cutting benefits from creative people, because since they do creative things All The Time, that means that they are in fact secretly working (while not doing anything commercial or getting paid) and hence are not qualified for benefits. Mostly therefore one must live their life taking cues from an old cat who does 23 hours per day of nothing much. The mental s...

To pass the time better than doomscrolling, I've been studying graphic design and illustration from library books. The graphic design part especially contained information on layout and values presented in a way how f.ex. watercolor classes don't necessarily explain themselves, and I like how both these books on these topics begin with Lascaux cave paintings, which I think is a little wild, because I've thought of them as ritualistic art, while from an illustrator or grap...
