"'In the United States, Donald Trump's second term as president has led to an alarming deterioration in press freedom, indicative of an authoritarian shift in government,' RSF said. 'His administration has weaponized institutions, cut support for independent media, and sidelined reporters.'" https://www.dw.com/en/global-press-freedom-at-all-time-low-in-2025-rsf-says/a-72411797

When I was doing my thesis research in NZ on mid 19th century assisted emigration a year ago, a report came out that 1000 Kiwis were emigrating per week. It seems it has continued to worsen: "Figures remain high, with 69,100 leaving in the year to February 2025..." I wonder if many are still blaming immigrants. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/09/leaving-new-zealand-record-departure-numbers

"I think these brilliant works of art often blind us to the violence they are depicting," says a museum director close to retirement age, having apparently never talked to a single woman about any of the works of art he referenced in this talk nor in this answer to an audience question.

Response I've sent to a query: "I am surprised that as the founder of a for-profit company, you would contact people through their professional profiles asking them to write for exposure rather than for a fee. I hope that you will reconsider doing this in the future. For-profit companies asking professionals of any field to write for free ("exposure") lowers the pay and devalues the work of all writers, and in my opinion it is particularly inappropriate to do...

Unsubscribed from a newsletter today: "Very disappointed that your newsletter today included a long screed about how the protests must be peaceful because otherwise they will use them against us, because it makes clear that you still don't understand that they will simply make stuff up if there is nothing they think they can use."

In a class this week I learned Renoir was, and I quote, "a virulent antisemite." So I asked a scholar of Impressionism I know about it and learned that not only do museums usually omit this, but many actively suppress attempts to mention it. Renoir died over a century ago. What are we even doing here? 🎨

I’ve been having a rather lousy week and then the man in front of me in line at the cafe paid for my order like we were in Naples. 🥹
