Basic income programmes are showing so much promise. At this stage, the only reasons we're not seeing governments rushing to implement them are malignant late-stage capitalism and neo-fascist social ideology: "Independent financial analysis found that for every €1 Ireland invested in the artists during the three-year pilot, €1.39 was returned to the economy through their taxes, spending, and decreased welfare payments and administrative costs." https://infosec.exchange/@codinghorr...

I've been reading "Resisting AI: an anti-fascist approach to artificial intelligence" by @danmcquillan , and I would recommend it vigorously to anyone with the slightest interest in tech ethics. (I'd also recommend it to those who think ethics has no place in tech, but experience suggests they wouldn't listen.)

If you, like me, really enjoy stickering the holy heck out of your laptop and other devices, but find that paper stickers won't hold up to everyday wear and tear, I may have a solution. So far, carefully painting the stickers with couple of coats of ModPodge Hard Coat (intended for doing decoupage on furniture) has worked really well for me. Which is good, because now I can put my "all I want is an end to white supremacist capitalist patriarchy" sticker on my laptop in...

I think it's time to act on my plan to replace all the humans with exact replicas made out of ice cream. If you'd like to be considered for an exemption, please file form IC-42 in twelveplicate with my secretary before the end of June, 2025. Otherwise, you may expect to be converted into a delicious frozen treat sometime in the second half of 2026. Thank you for your attention. And your impending deliciousness.

"“Free speech” isn't freedom from consequences and critique isn't harassment." Say it louder for the techbros in the back who need desperately to believe that they're the most victimized victims in the history of victimhood. https://mastodon.social/@dzwiedziu/116266576873619980

Edit: I found it - it's worth a read https://aeon.co/essays/your-brain-does-not-process-information-and-it-is-not-a-computer A couple of months ago, I read an article about the metaphor of the human mind as a computer. It was outlining the problems with this metaphor, and exploring how we might understand human cognition without resorting to the idea of computation. I *think* it may have been a review of a book on the same topic, or possibly have been an outline by the author of such a...

I daresay that Pride and Prejudice might have been less successful if Austen had stuck with her original draft of the first sentence.

Can anyone recommend a #tattoo artist who's really good at reproducing handwriting in black ink? It's just for a short phrase. Preferably in southern Wales or the South-West of England - though I'd be willing to go to London or similar if necessary. My previous tattooist in Swansea was phenomenal, reproducing everything down to the tiniest detail, and I don't want to settle for less for the next one.
