  Despite my many many misgivings about the current political climate and the policies & actions of our current government, I still think this is a remarkable country, with a remarkable history, filled with many remarkably good people doing remarkable things. Happy Birthday, America.

  *The Martian Chronicles* is the book that prompted me to start designing an homage to Electra (which remains incomplete still, but may someday get finished). The penultimate “chronicle” takes place on today’s date. (Thanks to https://beige.party/@Troggie/117036835050269682)

  I was inspired by several posts today to go dig out this old t-shirt that was created for a Font Bureau event that happened to fall on May 1st (2009). It was Font Bureau’s 20th anniversary and Cyrus Highsmith made this characteristic graphic for the event, with a nod to the date. The t-shirt is too discolored and threadbare to wear anymore, but I still keep it bunched up in my drawer. Classic Highsmith. (Sorry for all the wrinkles. Couldn’t find our iron.)

  I was meeting with @onpaperwings last week and, naturally, we veered off on a tangent about our favorite shared interest: all things Linotype. My focus has generally been “American” Linotype (i.e. Mergenthaler Linotype Co. or MLCo.), and the types developed here under C. H. Griffith’s direction. But I was lamenting that some interesting typefaces cut at “British” Linotype (i.e. Linotype & Machinery Ltd. or L&M), under the direction of Walter Tracy, seem to have never made it...

  I spent the morning picking up litter for our town’s annual roadside cleanup day. It’s frustrating to see how much crap people choose to throw out of their cars. Alcohol containers and fast-food packaging mostly (no surprise), but also tires, construction waste, etc. Our road is one of two in our rural town that gets a lot of traffic with people just passing through. A long stretch of it is unpopulated & wooded, bounded by state forest and watershed property. I guess people see it as so...
