IMO, the simplest solution to the ethics of training #AI on public web content is to always release the model open weights. You got training data from the public, the public deserves to own the result.

Human, not AI slop. AI didn’t choose to install itself onto a computer, write a 12,000 word research paper with hallucinated citations and publish it. A human did.

If mechanical time keeping hadn’t made the leap to luxury, I wonder if it would’ve ended up in the same situation as walkmans. https://obsoletesony.substack.com/p/why-sony-cant-bring-back-classic-walkman

Baked wings. Not crispy fried or charcoal grilled, but incredibly juicy and delicious anyway. Seasoned for an hour with a blended marinade of soy sauce, fresh garlic, cooking wine, smoked paprika, rice vinegar, and reconstituted dried scallop. Yep, the same scallop used for Cantonese soups. I thought it might give it that shrimpy umami I often find in Asian breaded wings. It did! #MakanApaToday #food #onlypans

RE: https://infosec.exchange/@llorenzin/116528610271499411 All of the anxiety I've felt around AI written in hauntingly beautiful prose. "AI didn't take our jobs. Greed did. Same greed that moved factories to Bangladesh and keeps slaves in cobalt mines in the Congo, wearing a new mask."

Cleaning out trapped lint and drain water deep in the recesses of our washer-dryer today. The stench is tolerable. The engineering decisions that led to a design requiring a micro extension wand on a shop vac to clean it all out is not.

It’s hard to explain but Kroger has a smell. For a long time it was our family go-to grocery store so I assumed it was what all grocery stores in America smelled like. Then I moved to Texas and HEB became my new go-to. Walked into a Kroger for the first time in maybe 8 years today and the smell is back. Wife says it’s a bit dank, but I like it.

“Control your future, with us, your friendly neighborhood gambling apps. The founder of Novig, yet another prediction market app, said that only 20% of their users make money, and touted it as much higher than the rest of the industry. That doesn’t sound like much control. That doesn’t sound like much of a future.” From: https://kyla.substack.com/p/the-ozempicization-of-the-economy

IT FINALLY WORKED!!!! All 3 miles of today’s run was powered by my running playlist streamed via Apple Watch cellular from my Plex media server. All the debugging, untangling Apple Watch dev quirks, all worth it. I’m streaming my own music to my own watch. Fuck you Spotify!!!! I can finally delete you from my life!!!

Editing a colleague’s writing yesterday and the #AI voice is so astoundingly obvious. Worse still is seeing how the press release expository writing suddenly shifts into second person (e.g. “what you should know”) which I can only assume is his roughshod attempt at editing. If you’re not a confident writer, plagiarism never did you any favors and AI changes nothing.

Imagine buying a flight, paying extra for leg room, packing a carry-on bag, separating your 3oz liquids, paying for parking at the airport, shuttling to your terminal, waiting through TSA, getting your bag pulled for 3 teaspoons of water in your bottle, waiting in line for TSA again, walking to your gate on the opposite end of the terminal, and finally, after all that, getting on a bus to your destination. That’s the magic of Landline by American Airlines. https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/...

PSA: directfile.irs.gov is dead. Not even a "we're closed" message with alternatives. Instead of going back to Turbotax or H&R Block, use freetaxusa.com. Ridiculous name, legitimate business. Federal filing is free. State is $16. Happily using it for the last 5 years. No referral code, just spreading the word.
