An International Socialist came to the door. He seemed a bit perturbed about how many of the English versions of his German paper he was having to give out. It was all about AI so of course I had to buy one off of him. Sometimes you go do research; sometimes the data comes to you. #AIEthics #Berlin #migration

Why can't this be true? Don't these numbers work out? 9M party members, 12M victims killed in camps, right? "More than 2/3 of Germans believe that their ancestors were not Nazis. Nearly 36% believe that their relatives were among the victims, and over 30% believe that their ancestors helped victims of the Nazis eg by hiding Jews. But this can't possibly be true. Only about 1% of Germans actively resisted. In 1945, 1 in 5 adult Germans was a member of the Nazi Party" https...

Farage has sought to portray the byelection as a “people versus the establishment” contest, prompting Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, to describe Binface as the “people’s candidate”. The prime minister, Keir Starmer, even addressed his candidacy on the sidelines of the Nato summit. “I think it’s actually against Labour party rules to endorse another [candidate],” he said. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2026/jul/08/clacton-byelection-likely-to-be-two-man-race-between-reform-leader-and-...

The so-called Department of Government Efficiency officially disbanded over the weekend. What was supposed to be a transformative effort to downsize government and improve public services has damaged the cause of “government efficiency” in the eyes of voters.
The popular name of this effort, officially the “U.S. DOGE Service,” was a backronym to fit leader Elon Musk’s affinity for the “doge” meme. The effort was never much more serious than its outlandish moniker. https://www.washingtonpost.com/...

#giftArticle We’re watching a demonstration of how wars can leap the bounds of what strategists call “agreed battle” and become global catastrophes. With Russia caught in a meat grinder in eastern Ukraine, suffering more than 30,000 casualties a month to Kyiv’s drones, the danger is that Putin will try a breakout against the NATO alliance that he claims is his real adversary — at a moment when the United States is less engaged than at any time in the alliance’s history. https://wapo.st/4vQ8lJe

40 years of peace had strengthened national economies, technology had speeded up the pace of life, scientific discoveries had been a source of pride to the spirit. The upswing could be felt to almost the same extent in all European countries. Cities were more attractive and densely populated year by year; the Berlin of 1905 was not like the city I had known in 1901. From being the capital of a princely state it had become an international metropolis, which in turn paled beside the Berlin of 1910
