A “sperm data layer” by an AI company sounds extremely Boston. Missed opportunity to call it SperML, though.

Have LLMs had a big impact in the Sovereign Citizen movement? They have a machine that can yield pseudo-law gibberish with citations and footnotes so much faster now. A cutting edge of bespoke legal theory.

I'll be at HOPE for the weekend -- say hi if you're around! 😄

@marqueandrepris@mastodon.social No, I haven't maintained that app in almost a decade and have no interest in further development at this time.

@marqueandrepris@mastodon.social No one. The project has lost utility - location accuracy in urban environments was never precise enough for tasks like "bring me from point A to point B avoiding as much surveillance as possible," so the primary value of the project was raising awareness about the degree to which we're surveilled. In my mind, the proliferation of technologies like Flock and Ring have made the value of such an awareness campaign highly questionable, and I...

@marqueandrepris@mastodon.social If you feel so strongly about the vision then I encourage you to fork the project and revive it. We're on the same page about the abuses of flock, but I no longer see this kind of tool as a useful avenue for holding a surveillance state to account.

I just saw someone describe training machine learning models as "rewardmaxxing" and - while not wrong - yikes … but if training a model is “rewardmaxxing,” then I guess overfitting to training data is “rewardgooning”

My microwave emitted a loud displeased electric burp, a bright flash, and began wafting out smoke from near the magnetron, so safe to say my oven is cooked 😔 I've attempted a fair number of DIY electronics repairs, but I draw the line at high voltage capacitors that can zap me to the perma-nappy, so goodnight sweet prince to that microwave

Inspirational. Aspirational. I want all my papers to be like this.

People before the cell phone era had to memorize lots of phone numbers and can remember numeric sequences for friends or family. I remember my IP address through middle and high school. Why is this seared in there?

So I can’t just mail a liquid. Like if I go to USPS with a puddle and some stamps they’ll tell me no. But what about a cardboard box filled with liquid? Is there a maximum sogginess the postal service will accept? How moist can my mail be?

Thinking about LLM model collapse 🔥 https://backdrifting.net/post/082_model_collapse

There’s this collapsed lamppost I pass on the way to work, and each time I go by it’s disassembled just a bit more and things are missing or splayed out across the grass. It feels like decay, watching nature reclaim life, first with scavengers, then with fungus. All the little human ants nibbling away at the lamppost carcass to support their colonies

There was an enormous boom in Boston today. I felt it as my lights flickered and speaker popped. The press say it was a meteor entering the atmosphere, creating a seismic-scale sonic shockwave as it vaporized. Blissfully unaware of the broader implications, I left to get dinner, a chill in the air and anxiety in the eyes of my neighbors. I found the pizza joint down the street and the Mexican restaurant a block further have both permanently closed. The local church and liquor store, ironically a...

A new trend I've noticed is *many* independent researchers asking for arXiv endorsement on Reddit. None of them share their drafts (until commenters demand it), just "here's my endorsement code, can you approve me for cs.SE / cs.AI?" I suspect that LLMs are encouraging this practice. Very strange.
