A Gest of Robin Hood COIN series wargame. It’s simple and has clever ideas around turn order and action selection. As Robin Hood, you feel on the run, just one step ahead of the law. Overall, I enjoyed it, though the gameplay was incremental—there were no flashy, surprising moves, just a steady inching forward. Still, it evoked childhood memories of watching Robin of Sherwood on the telly on Sunday afternoons. #boardgames

Macao A later Alea game when they were leading the hobby. Reworked as Amsterdam in 2022. It took us 2.5 hours including teach and we were playing at a leisurely pace. The windrose is a lovely mechanic that rewards planning without feeling too constrictive. Incredibly beige. #boardgames

Master Thieves has been a grail game for me since 2006 when I went to Essen. It sold out immediately and was never made again. I got to play it at Eclectic Games in Reading at one of their open #boardgames days. It's a box of spinning drawers filled with gems. You're trying to feed gems into the box and then take them out before your opponents. The game isn't as good as the box, but the box is *exceptional*. 1/3

Mille Fiori This has the Knizia trademark fast turns and simple rules with a light theme, but this is a pure victory point race with no direct interaction. I prefer Rebirth. #boardgames

Lords of Vegas You're buying casinos and linking them, in the style of Acquire, but payouts are based on cards and dice. This is James Ernest's highest rated game at BGG. Ironic considering he's most famous for his Cheapass games - before print and play became common. Ernest's games are usually too loose for me. This one is bearable - although it ran out of steam 2 turns before the end. Clever ideas and enjoyable. #boardgames

Oh My Goods I thought Alexander Pfister only did long, turgid games like Great Western Trail, but this one is a light engine builder. A random number of cards are flipped. If the resources on the cards match a production card you select, you get goods. You can then build extra buildings or hire followers which both let you produce more valuable goods. It's a nice little race. There's not much interaction but it's quick and light. #boardgames

Tzolkin 3 hour long worker placement games covered with tracks aren't usually my jam, but this one was bearable. The gears mechanism is super clever and thematic. #boardgames

The bluebells are stunning right now. The air is pungent.

Every time I play QMG Cold War I enjoy it more. It's a 3 player game and if the player in 3rd place gets too far behind, the 2nd placed player has to give them VPs to avoid 1st getting an autovictory. Balances on a knife edge. #boardgames

Ego I've played twice with sketchy rules explanations, so it all clicked into place for me too late. A player aid with final scoring would help a lot. It's a great game though. Original, fast and punchy. Classic Knizia. I am intrigued to play Beowulf again. #boardgames

Khôra Exactly what it looks like. You push markers up beige recessed tracks. There is a theme but there might as well not be. Zero player interaction. Basically a solo game. I'm bewildered by the popularity of these games. I probably feel the same way my dad did looking at punk music. 😂 #boardgames

Fürstenfeld 1 hour engine builder where you're trying to build production in a confined area and then build over your production with game-winning buildings. It's all about timing. An interesting market manipulation battle for gamers. FF does this better than anyone. #boardgames

Tantony In an interview with Chris Wray, David Parlett recommended Tantony as one of his best games for four in partnerships. It's quite different from any other standard card game I've played. You have to decide whether to give tricks away or keep them. Highly recommended. #boardgames

Mü I had forgotten how punishing it is to mess up a bid. Game goes to 200 points and I lost 180 in a single hand! This means that bidding will be very cautious and a hand can even be abandoned with penalties handed out. I tried Skat a little while ago and Mü's conservative bidding feels similar. It's quite different from the lightweight tricktakers we have become used to from Japan. I would like to try again, but Mü is definitely one for gamers. #boardgames

I've just learned about Quadratic Voting. might work better than Ranked Choice voting for games nights? 🤔 It stops the "tyranny of the majority" as it takes into account intensity of desire for an option. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xRbnobzs2Y

Quartermaster General Cold War Designed for 3 factions and it handles kingmaking brilliantly as the 2nd place faction has to give the faction in last place VPs if they fall over 20 behind. Therefore it becomes a 2:1 fight. Always cagey and competitive. #boardgames
