A compelling article on the advantages of #Reticulum over #Meshtastic and #MeshCore: https://www.jonaharagon.com/posts/im-getting-into-mesh-networks-meshtastic-meshcore-and-reticulum/ Meshtastic and MeshCore make it relatively easy to set up local LoRa mesh networks, but in practice they remain largely tied to LoRa devices and messaging. Reticulum goes further: it can build a more resilient network by routing across different kinds of connections, including LoRa, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, microwave li...

Today I joined the Open Monday at xHain (@xHain_hackspace@chaos.social) Hack+Makespace. It was great to discover the space, and I really appreciate that they set aside a day to welcome everyone. I hope I can join one of their upcoming events about using LoRa radio devices to build mesh networks! I’m particularly curious to learn more about Reticulum. I’m still waiting for my devices to arrive so I can start experimenting with them. Ah, it's awesome that they accept dogs! #LoRa #MeshNetwo...

RE: https://mstdn.social/@ricardoharvin/116937462695002300 When a coup d’état is about to happen in a country generally ignored by Western media, I often see more public attention than we are giving to this actual threat to the entire world. By "attention," I don't mean amplifying the future king of the world's trolling. I mean seriously discussing the implications of what he's saying and doing. #USPol

Am I overreacting in my thoughts, or is Trump openly laying the groundwork for a coup in November? P. S. I know many people here is aware of the danger. My concern is whether the press, civil society, and political movements can do enough to stop it. #USPol #Democracy #coupdétat #Putsch

I remember asking people at the last #FOSDEM about ways to communicate by radio in case of an Internet blackout. I explored a few possibilities, but no one mentioned #mesh networks, even though I'd first heard about them more than 10 years ago from an activist friend living in Pará, near the Amazon rainforest. A few weeks ago, I bookmarked a video on the topic. I finally watched it yesterday and discovered #Meshtastic. Since then, I've also come across #MeshCore, #Reticulum, and #atak....

If the Internet disappeared tomorrow, what would still work, and how could we still communicate? I just watched a presentation by @vaurora@mstdn.social about the idea and would like to follow one of her suggestions: https://bowshock.nl/irc/#short-version Is there already an Internet Resiliency Club in #Berlin? I'm aware of #Freifunk and its established work. This seems broader and complementary: a group for practical experiments with mesh networks, offline communication, local services, a...

Unfortunately for some, I will be posting more often about ADHD. I will openly discuss the subject and share what I have learned. Recently, at a party, I had a conversation with a mother whose daughter has ADHD. Initially, she was thought to be unintelligent until she was diagnosed and several measures were taken, such as attending a school with fewer students and taking medication. During the conversation, this mother made an intriguing comment: She said that she had asked her daughter not to...

I had the opportunity to tell the founders of the Sovereign Tech Agency (@sovtechfund@mastodon.social) that I'm a big fan of their organization. I firmly believe that other countries should have similar initiatives. In fact, the EU should have one too. Their recent €600k+ grant to Mastodon is a great example of what public investment in open digital infrastructure can look like. It strengthens the Fediverse, a real alternative to X. As I’ve argued in the #LeaveX campaign: we already have a...

The far-right is creating lots of fake AI generated avatars supporting their political leadership on Social Media. In the US, pro-Trump https://archive.is/1q1zM In Brazil, there are videos pro-Bolsonaro (not the father in jail, but one of his sons). https://www.bbc.com/portuguese/articles/c7vq10lvv15o (in Portuguese) It's amazing how skilled the far right is at using state-of-the-art Big Tech tools to spread disinformation. But that's no coincidence. Are you seeing similar...

When will we start referring to the Trump administration as the "Trump regime" or "American regime" in the same way that we refer to other autocratic regimes? Informative Wikipedia article on Trump and Fascim https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Trump_and_fascism Of the references used, I recommend Anatomy of Fascism by Robert Paxton. It was the first book I read on the topic, motivated by the misleading use of the term "fascism" in political discussions and the election of a far-right president in Brazil. It was a very shocking election for me at that time. Another good book is On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century...

RE: https://troet.cafe/@obstschale/116097201170322270 That's a good question. Rather than creating an alternative to #LinkedIn and #Xing, wouldn't it be better to try to make Xing part of the #Fediverse Starting a new professional network requires much more effort than collaborating with a company with an established network, if they are open to it. In a recent comparison of engagement around a Leave.X campaign post,[1] someone pointed out that a female journalist who is active in the feminist movement and critical of Big Tech had a very different experience than others. The Mastodon post was shared twice, while the Bluesky version was shared over 200 times and received significantly more interactions. This raises questions about tech-savvy spaces like Mastodon and how they reflect broader societal issues. For women on Mastodon: Do yo...
