It is 1990. My primary OS is Ultrix on my “Maxine” class Personal DECstation. I compile joe(1) from sources pulled from Usenet, and use it to configure my build of nethack 3.0. It is 1996. My primary OS is SunOS4.x on a SPARCStation 1+. I build joe 2.8, and use it to configure my build of nethack 3.2 It is 2006. My primary OS is Gentoo Linux on a Franken-box of random hardware. The first thing I do once i have a working kernel is compile joe 3.0, and use it to configure my build of nethack 3.4...

I have been on the record with my absolute disdain for the entire governing apparatus of the NCAA since I competed under their auspices in the 90s. But this 76 team March Madness bracket is a bullshit cash-grab abomination, holy shit. Yes, it will dilute the possibility of Cinderella upsets, that's the true tragedy of it all, but it doesn't even parse as a bracket. All of the 16 and (upset-favorite) 12 seeds will be decided by a play-in game, but only two of the 11s and 15s?...

Nethack 5.0 has been out for 10 days. I have YASD’d a good 30 adventurers so far (mostly because I am drawn to early-game weaklings like Tourists and Wizards, and I play with a foolish aggression that 36 years of playing has still not beaten out of me). The QoL improvements are fabulous. I’ve discovered a dozen new item types, and to my horror I’ve found a handful of nerfed mechanics that will make ascension even more difficult 😲 I love this. I will never tire of this ridiculous game.

It is funny to me— not funny-haha, but funny-bleargh-ptui— that the most reliable and properly designed and implemented feature in the entirety of Gmail is the “you forgot the attachment, you dumbass” pop-up. So kudos to that one programmer, I guess?

Warm-water fishing season is right around the corner, so for the first time in 3 years I have updated the catalog of big predator flies on my shop champlainflyworks.com. There are some new flies! Including the ones I have been throwing about half the time lately, the “Houdini Glider”, a bulkhead variant of my own design that is alllllllllmost snag less and weedless. I have pulled these out of brush piles that would frustrate an otter, and gotten eats and follows that no other fly would enable....

What kind of house do we live in? The kazoo in the “small musical knick-knacks drawer” (1) sounded a little ratty, and R will need one for the music party tonight. So I went to check both kids’ rooms and immediately found, without lifting or opening anything, or even turning my head really, not one but two kazoos in each room. One plastic, one metal, because of course. First order retrievability for kazoos. That’s what kind of house we live in. 1) what do you mean you don’t have a small...

If you 1) are a podcast person, 2) can bear to wallow for 90 minutes in the clown show that is US foreign policy [sic] in the Middle East, the Weekly Show with John Stewart podcast from March 4, with Wendy Sherman (who negotiated the JCPOA) and Christiane Amanpour (who, TIL, is Iranian) is absolutely phenomenal. It covers a huge amount of ground, even if some of the speculation— and the polling mentioned— is already out of date. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-weekly-show-with-jon-stew...

Yah, so, sitting here at 44° N, looks like there will be no stargazing ever again if Starlink and/or SpaceX gets their satellite superclusters launched 🤬 (Of course, they won’t, Kessler Syndrome is gonna slip past the breaking point reeeeeeal soooon) https://mastodon.social/@sundogplanets/116152057176915428

“Why so many saves?” Well, see, it's ike this: 1. The 1,808 hour save is my original save, from late 2016. I was not a day 1 player, but close, it was on the Foundation patch when I started this save. This is the save where I joined the Galactic hub and Citizen Science division, helped out with the BONKERS Waking Titan ARG before Atlas Rises (iykyk), did a *lot* of exploration looking for Diplos and Mushroom Beetles, and weathered multiple galaxy resets. It's still, obviously, m...

Because people will ask: the first two are “normal", the second two, I was gifted eggs by a player with a heavily modded PC install. Those two exchanges may have been the only ~10 minutes I’ve had the game in multi-player in years. The dragon is just a new skin on a tameable flying creature (maybe even a beetle like in pic 2). The sky worm is an aquatic predator mapped to a tameable flying creature.

OK final NMS post of the day: not shown in the tally of total hours spent in this game are the half dozen or so Permadeath saves that all ended the exact same way: Fleeing a predator or sentinel, jetpacking safely away, then immediately falling juuuuuuuust a little too far into a cavern or hole or onto a sloped hillside and dying from impact damage. I never got a single Permadeath save up to 100 hours without this happening. It was almost Nethack-esue (“Nibbled to death by a pony, while helpless...

Jesus Fuck, we have a new SVP and it's-- I know you will be shocked-- a white male hustle-culture dude. Clearly gets all of his self-worth from work, and loved his former company because nobody ever said to him “why are you calling me on a Sunday?” FML.
