I’ll be presenting our lab’s latest paper at ACM GROUP 2023 next week about augmenting women’s safety in online dating through novel AI concepts for risk detection and harm prevention. Very excited about this work and future directions! #sigchi #group2023 Paper: https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3567559

With @group 2023 officially over, I’m profoundly grateful for the new friendships made and old friendships continued as Community Chair. Really can’t imagine a better return to in-person conferences than this. Until ’25!

Our lab's #CHI2023 paper “Online Dating as Context to Design Sexual Consent Technology with Women and LGBTQ+ Stakeholders” has been conditionally accepted! To those that got the ax: don’t fear; this paper got a Quick Reject from CSCW days earlier. Life!

Pre-print of our #chi2023 paper on sexual consent technology is live on my site. We explore concepts for preventing sexual violence at scale with dating apps, wearable tech, AI, mixed reality, and social robots. https://dougzytko.com/research/Zytko_Furlo_CHI23_preprint.pdf

How do we design for safe, consensual interactions in the dating metaverse? Happy to share a pre-print of our IEEE TVCG journal paper to be presented at IEEE VR about design of consent mechanics in VR dating applications. https://dougzytko.com/research/Zytko_Chan_TVCG.pdf We conducted a participatory design study about how VR dating apps could be designed to prevent harm. Consent (how a user agrees to a specific interaction) emerged as a central theme in design concepts. Implications for social...

It’s official - our team at Oakland University has been awarded $2.5 million across two grants from the US Army to make foundational advances to rapid prototyping and mixed methods research in VR. I’d say more but it’s literally top secret. :) Can't wait to work with my colleagues across three departments in our School of Engineering!

I want to thank the amazing #CHI2023 attendees for choosing to listen to my talk about sexual consent technology and engage with me during and afterwards about my (and their!) work. Love this community. https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3544548.3580911

Are you an early stage HCI student researcher, or know someone that is? Consider applying to Futuring SIGCHI Emerging Scholars, a one-day event at @cscw this October for mentoring and community-building. Selected students will receive partial financial support for conference attendance! Note the application deadline of September 2. Application link: https://lnkd.in/gSukxX-Y

This fall (i.e., today) I'm joining University of Michigan-Flint as an Associate Professor in the College of Innovation & Technology. What I've learned through this journey is that I wildly underestimate the time and energy needed to move offices. :)

To anyone at IEEE RO-MAN this week, check out my student Isha's paper “Ethical Participatory Design of Social Robots Through Co-Construction of Participatory Design Protocols.” She used sexual consent robots as a context to foreground ethics in robot PD methods.
