<p>I&#39;m currently spending my time as a father of 2 grown-up sons, Perl hacker who is not afraid to touch other tech (mostly Postgres and vue), sort-of DJ, bicyclist, cook, taker-of-pictures.</p>

A rather short report on what I did during the #Perl Toolchain Summit https://domm.plix.at/perl/2026_04_perl_toolchain_summit.html

Today I have the lastest dev version of PAUSE (#Perl Author Upload Server) running on my laptop via docker-compose! Now I just need to wrap everything up and get it merged by andk :-)

Today I join an illustrious group of #Perl hackers at the Perl Toolchain Summit in Vienna. I&amp;#39;m mainly here as a local organizer, but I also plan to discuss and hack on a few things, eg containerizing `pause`.

Today I had to reimport some data because the online spreadsheet that the data was entered in interpreted a URL ending with a UUID as a number and increased the value in each row (if the UUID happend to end with a digit and the human operator &amp;quot;dragged&amp;quot; the rows down to copy the values). Thanks for nothing, &amp;quot;smart spreadsheet&amp;quot;. Please stay dumb and don&amp;#39;t fiddle with my data!

Yesterday I explained my mixed feelings regarding LLMs to a friend by comparing them to cars (&quot;I don&#39;t like cars, they destroy a lot, but they are also so very convenient&quot;). Today I read the same argument here: https://aphyr.com/posts/420-the-future-of-everything-is-lies-i-guess-where-do-we-go-from-here

Today I got all all the issues of Donjon Zenit I was missing (all except #1...) from Older Son as a birthday present! (Well, today they actually arrived. On my birthday I got a very sweet and fun hand drawn card from him, spoiling the upcoming / belated present)

Today I learned how to set up Sway / Wayland with an projector in clone mode for giving a presentation using `wl-mirror` and `wl-present`. This post helped a lot: https://tedn.life/2025/03/09/ubuntu-wayland-sway-just-mirror-the-screen/ . Also better to test/learn this now then right before my upcoming talk at the German Perl Workshop: https://act.yapc.eu/gpw2026/talk/8035

Today I spend nearly 13 hours and ~1600km on two trains to get from Berlin via Strasbourg to Marseille. It worked like a charm, was rather comfortable (due to me sitting in first class) and not that expensive (212€).

Today I sowed seeds for six different kinds of chili into my cultivation bed.

Today I deployed my first big feature / refactor developed with the help of &amp;quot;AI&amp;quot;. We migrated a vue2/vuetify2 app to vue3/vuetify3. It took some time plus some guidance and thinking on my part, but I did not have to delve into the depths of vueitfy/vue/js-setup etc too often. Still not sure if I&amp;#39;m happy or sad about the whole process...

#potd A nice (but cold) ride with a horse draw carriage and a very old friend from school (who owns the horse and carriage) https://domm.plix.at/potd/2026-01-23.html

Today I once again wrote some nice SQL to fix yesterdays fuckup. A few years ago I would have written a #Perl script, but nowadays my #SQL is good enough (and #Postgres has nice enough features) to do the fixup in two SQL statements (and a fraction of the runtime).

Today I also finished setup of my travel laptop (an old Lenovo Yoga) for our three week journey to Senegal, which starts tomorrow.

Today we had 4 border checks (depart from Senegal, enter Gambia, cross the Gambia river on the ferry, exit Gambia and enter Senegal) and had to deal with two foreign currencys (at least one payment for the &amp;quot;transit visa&amp;quot; when entering Gambia felt a bit shady). A big &amp;quot;THANK YOU&amp;quot; to the EU as we don&amp;#39;t have to suffer through this when travelling in Europe!

Today we had our family birthday party for the not so small number of relatives having their birthday in february. My mother made me a box containing one small present for each of my years, each with a picture of me at the respective age. Very beautiful present!

Today I brought down a website by missing a comma in a config file (I thought it was just bash-like env var list, but in fact it was javascript...)

Hm, did Data::Random got deleted from #CPAN? I have some failing build pipelines and metacpan does not list it anymore, only some dependencies. #Perl Anybody knows who can investigate this?

@orangeacme@fosstodon.org Actually I&#39;m welcoming the &quot;5&quot; at the start today. And Happy Birthday to you, too #PerlTwin

Today I&#39;m saying goodbye to the &quot;4&quot; at the start of my age.

#potd A week ago I was cycling over sandy piste in Senegal, now this. After de-icing the bike cycling to the office worked quite well, because the city of Vienna is very good at removing snow from bike paths and streets. The pavements are in a worse state, because removing the snow there is the job of each house owner. https://domm.plix.at/potd/2026-02-20.html

The current snowfall and 0° in Vienna is a rather hard slap in the face compared to the sunshine and 25°+ we had the last weeks in Senegal.

Today I wanted to go scuba diving, but the dive school cancled on me :-( Instead we walked to the most western point of the African mainland and spend a nice afternoon at the beach.
