Here’s the whole story on how we got it to my basement, and a semi-technical overview of what was included. watch it here: https://tv.ol-worldwi.de/I%20got%20a%20PDP-11!.mp4https://youtu.be/6Nm0PmUu-Ik(* - technically, an LSI-11. watch the video if you wanna know the difference ^^)

the cool thing about having two ISPs is how you can remotely deploy a firewall rule that breaks both uplinks at the same time the cool thing about dual-stack is how you can do a backflip and connect over IPv6 instead, then fix the broken v4 rule

i can’t turn on my amplifier because the vhs deck is on top of it and that would heat up through heat transfer, and I can’t have that because changing the temperature will most likely affect the tape ripping process :throwing-hands-up-crying: VHS has some negative parts. but i think this is a hell of my own making, including the class A (AB?) amp i use for my speakers :neocat_woozy: RE: https://donotsta.re/objects/ddcd76dc-c7cb-4622-baab-e6cf7b78d388

the most unexpected part of heavily relying on VHS in my production pipeline is how nice handling physical media can feel sure, spending an hour every time i want to digitize… one hour of video sucks, and sometimes it needs to be babied because the tracking goes to shit on worse quality tapes… but all of the sights and sounds are very satisfying. lots of going click and clack, i like that

announcing a new page: https://floppy.cd-rom.net/ :boost_ok: it’s a wiki for things that otherwise would be left unwritten (because preparing a full blogpost is effort), but still could be useful to someone else. Anything interesting and original belongs here - not just tech! (more about the page) i’m gonna be writing shorter notes and more technical posts over there. If you’d find a place like this useful, feel free to register an account (and wait for approval) :blobcat3c:

if you launch GNU bc and type warranty it gives you a license message, long and boring if you do the same in busybox bc, it just returns 0. that’s actually correct too

looking for an S-VHS deck that’s not broken or moldy, for a sensible price. Limited to Germany/France/Netherlands/Poland/maybe UK due to shipping costs; I will actually make use of it, in more ways than one. lmk if you have one! (alternatively, a normal VHS deck with Hi-Fi audio, but that would need to be half-free to make sense strategically for me ^^) :boost_ok:

my dear sysops: where do you store backups? :boost_ok: i’m looking for something below 2EUR/TB, because otherwise it’s just more cost-effective to buy drives and create a small backup server… the whole thing would be in the ballpark of 30-40TB, so if you want to suggest hetzner storageboxes… uh…

holy shit. Tech Tangents stuck a CAV LaserDisc below a microscope, and with a very specific angle of light, actually managed to see video frames in the refraction. this is nuts https://youtube.com/watch?v=qZuR-772cks
