Prompted from the latest #Emacs Canvas patch discussion, me and @minad@mastodon.world worked on making canvas work in display margins. We wondered if it would work in the mode-line, and voila it does! Look at that looping magical thing in the mode-line. The best part is that none of this is memory intensive or laggy anymore :D

So after one frenzy #Emacs Saturday, earlier today the LLM commit has been removed from the Emacs git log. Thanks to the Emacs maintainers and #Savannah admins for handling this swiftly. Hopefully this never happens again. https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2026-07/msg00398.html

Going live on PeerTube in a few minutes! https://tv.dyne.org/w/qNptn9nxRydPPMqPr4Ui9p This time I'll be doing something different from my usual Emacs Reader or Canvas project. I'd be exploring to use and modify some exciting Emacs packages that help in creating a development environment that doesn't require LSP. Namely, I'm going to try out and showcase CEDET packages (Semantic, EDE, etc.)

    Love @gotosocial for this:

Stallman's 83rd Rule: All attempts to recreate a new GNU #Emacs will fail if they do not at its core preserve Emacs' extensibility, self-documentability, a Lisp interpreter, while altogether building an architecture that is distinct from Emacs core.

If you Care, you'll take the time to do what you need to do to make things Good. If you Care, you can make use of fancy maths, or debugging tools, or TDD methodologies to make things Good. If you don't Care about making things Good, then no tools or techniques will save you. But most amazingly, if you do Care, and you don't have access to any fancy tools or techniques, you'll probably end up making things Good anyway. It might take longer than if you'd...

Going live in an hour on #PeerTube to work (and hopefully) finish the #Emacs Canvas Patch. I have delayed this far too much, I should not worry so much about this and get it done with. https://tv.dyne.org/w/aqbcMQuPaBV8X92EZaxx1d

Unpopular opinion, but I think PHP is better than JavaScript. The recent demonstration of that is @movim , I can run this web app from #GNU Icecat. Something 99% of the web apps would simply be untenable for, because they have non-free JavaScript.

Following the request of @tusharhero I am going to be posting in this thread the chronological development of #Emacs Reader as it began last Feb 2025.

The techniques we teach and draw upon are common to all of engineering design. We control complexity by building abstractions that hide details when appropriate. We control complexity by establishing conventional interfaces that enable us to construct systems by combining standard, well-understood pieces in a "mix and match" way. We control complexity by establishing new languages for describing a design, each of which emphasizes particular aspects of the design and deemphasize...

Streaming in ~10m at #PeerTube. Mostly going to work on #Emacs Canvas API patch, maybe rant a bit about the recent regressions in the arena of programming. Also going to showcase my new non-LSP development setup for C/C++. https://tv.dyne.org/w/aqbcMQuPaBV8X92EZaxx1d

Another friend of ours from MonadicSheep is experimenting with a new Guile-based editor, especially with a new (message-passing) archicture. Here's the latest update: https://appetrosyan.github.io/posts/neoemacs-progress-update/

I finished wiring @minad 's Canvas API to Pale. And now we can render 1080p 60FPS video inside an #Emacs buffer without having to do tiling and other such nasty hacks. Enjoy this view of the universe inside your favorite operating system: https://codeberg.org/attachments/6e87f730-5e3b-4f92-baae-1fa5db7b95a2 Can't wait for this patch to get merged into Emacs!
