If you Care, you'll take the time to do what you need to do to make things Good. If you Care, you can make use of fancy maths, or debugging tools, or TDD methodologies to make things Good. If you don't Care about making things Good, then no tools or techniques will save you. But most amazingly, if you do Care, and you don't have access to any fancy tools or techniques, you'll probably end up making things Good anyway. It might take longer than if you'd had a teacher who could show you some of their favourite neat tricks, but you'll get there in the end.     And we've seen how much people have lost basic care for programming to let idiotic companies not only have power over them, but let them make you addicted to a tool that slowly makes you apathetic about your own programs. A programmer that doesn't neurotically care about his programs, who isn't losing sleep over this, and who isn't hell-bent on making it work efficiently, simply isn't a good programmer. You can push 900 commits a day, you can write 10k LOC a day (people actually do this), but you will not be among us, you will be counted among "software developers" who work for money, nothing wrong with that, but you are not a hacker or a nerd. We will share the sympathy of you being corned into such a position, but you still have the freedom to not buy into it and write free software whenever you can. Even if you can't, you should at least support those who do. There are people who really care about their software, these are the people who built #Emacs, who built #OpenBSD, and who continue to write programs that will probably never bring them money, or fame but simply because they love & care about what they do. One possible way to look at the silver lining of the current demise is that it differentiates those who really care, and those who don't. And those who cared, will possibly try to take a harder stance and care more.
