Very good piece about #Berlin, and #gentrification, and #capitalism via @podo "For many of us romantic types, these ‘redevelopments’ seem lifeless, reducing human existence to transactions. We cannot imagine how the developers can feel proud of this." https://www.asomo.co/p/the-craft-of-capitalism #tacheles

So tired of inflated estimates of protest attendance by organizers. And strangely, most media outlets seem these days to just mention organizer counts. It used to be that mainstream media mentioned only police counts, 25 or so years ago. And we wouldtake #indymedia numbers and police numbers and split the difference. Id love to believe there were 8 million at #nokings total, but when i see with my own eyes for years the protests being inflated by at least an order of magnitude locally, it just...

“In the name of efficiency, it just makes sense for you to turn over ever greater portions of your thought process to this seductive helper, never stopping to ask yourself what it is costing you. You are a nice person and your job (writing) deserves to be easy. There, there. Allow yourself to sink into the warm opiate of cerebral ease. This is better. Yes. This is much better.” https://www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/go-ahead-and-use-ai-it-will-only #ai

it's so interesting how many people put little warnings in their bios about what they wont allow other users to say to them, what will get them blocked, etc. Is there really that much ... oh waait i guess i have no idea because i have like 100 followers and most of these people have like thousands of followers so yeah maybe it is a problem and you have to kind of draw boundaries in advance to prevent being completely swamped by trolls, replyguys, and other assholes. god i'm so g...

“there are generally two broad categories of users. On one side are those who treat AI as a powerful but sometimes faulty service that needs careful human oversight and review to detect reasoning or factual flaws in responses. On the other side are those who routinely outsource their critical thinking to what they see as an all-knowing machine.” And then there’s a third broad category of people that understand that AI is just a completely terrible terrible thing that should never be used and sh...

Subbing at an elementary school today as a STEM teacher and the day’s activity is to talk about making choices and then they each make a little paper spinner for randomly choosing between 4 things. The quote of the day is when I was asking kids what are some choices that you make at school during the school day and one kid said “when you decide whether to do your work or get in trouble” 😈

“I have, of course, used slivers of my very own life to write fiction. And maybe that has had some consequences. On my daughter, for instance. She is convinced, for example, that when she was five years old, she almost drowned in a swimming pool in the shape of an electric guitar in Memphis, Tennessee, like the girl in one of my books almost did. It took me a while to convince her that no, she has never almost drowned, that in fact she's never been to Memphis, Tennessee, and that there i...
