This seems a very of-the-moment U.S. political approach: do something adversarial and then ask the opponent to make a concession. This in relation to US tariffs on Canada: "Chris Swonger, left, president and CEO of the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, says he thinks it would be 'a great olive branch' for Canadian alcohol retailers to put American spirits back on the shelves" https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/american-alcohol-boycotts-ba...

In light of Instructure paying ransom to ShinyHunters, I am wondering about the risk assessment. Is the ransom less than they (their insurance) would pay in litigation to exposed universities and schools? It certainly doesn't prevent a lawsuit so perhaps it's intended as mitigation. I almost feel like FOIA'ing our license to see what recourse a hosted client has. Our lawyers would want to address that next go round. https://www.instructure.com/incident_update #EdTech

The Guardian in a concerted push for ad views, at least on mobile. I clicked the "allow ads" and their ad herder, Admiral ("visitor relationship manager" lol) has a [pop up? modal?] that takes you to a chrome-less Google Form (and something else). I didn't realize they had offloaded me to Admiral's at first. This feels very unprofessional (no proper ticket management?). All my answers were "other". Also: stop using "w...

Enjoying new actual play by WOTC Dungeon Masters. GM is Jasmine Bhullar, PCs are Neil Newbon & Devora Wilde (Baldurs Gate 3), Mayanna Berrin (Dispatch), Christian Navarro (guest on Critical Role Campaign 3: F.R.I.D.A.) Production includes a HUD and lots of atmosphere. Great for new folks. It has been funny to see Newbon and Wilde in a lot of D&D actual play and I wonder which came first, the D&D or BG3, but they seem really engaged in the game. [Ep 2] https://www.youtub...

Until I saw the US Air Force needed to replace "dozens" of aircraft, I hadn't realized how many (admittedly a lot of Reaper drones) had been lost in the war on Iran (20% due to friendly fire): "Overall, nearly 40 U.S. aircraft have been destroyed and roughly 10 have been damaged, according to The War Zone’s tally of open-source information. " https://www.defenseone.com/policy/2026/04/air-forces-top-general-supplemental-funding-needed-replace-us-aircr...

I really enjoyed this one shot, very lightly inspired by "Kingdom Come: Deliverance II". The table is really well-knit together: Deborah Ann Woll, Liam McIntyre, Ashley Johnson. But Gina DeVivo is on fire; I was in stitches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7bt1FzGxS0 #TTRPG #CriticalRole

Interesting read from The Rest of the World (and a reason I enjoy following them) about how an AU company used low-wage gig workers around the world to build out data in foreign languages which it then sold on or licensed to the US military for its surveilliance tools. https://restofworld.org/2026/gig-workers-us-military-appen #AI #Language

Starting the day with a bit of KLF (Justified Ancients of Mu Mu), including "Doctorin' the Tardis". The video is mostly a Blues Brothers-era cop car being chased by what I'm guessing (I've never watched Dr. Who but other photos of them look less rudimentary) is a homemade Tardis, and involves lots of rural English scenery, "you wot"s, and doing donuts on a disused industrial estate. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DsAVx0u9Cw4 #Music #Electronica
