I've written about electrical safety since the late 1980s: articles, columns, newsletters, books, slide decks. I'm updating Old Electrical Wiring, my first book, and seeking a new publisher. I'm also working on, and pitching, a broader lessons-learned, provisionally Safer Home Repair: do it yourself without killing yourself. My third book, Behind the Code: NEC History, I decided to stop adding to at ~450pp. It talks about the reasons behind U.S. wiring rules, and that's plenty.

@deliaturner I wonder why people take the class of someone with so poor an attitude. I'm wonderfully fortunate to be taking a class from a 26 yo MFA sme, an encouraging enthusiast. While I'm the only geezer in the class, we're learning together and from each other. This poetry class is one of the most positive experiences I'm having currently. Last semester, I took two classes: one in the history dept, one in the dance dept. Again a kind enthusiast, a grad dance...

#Uber workings: Do you understand their scheduling? I need to get gimpily downtown (for an appointment to have my operated-upon foot put back in use) Wednesday, and don't have a ride. I've a few questions. 1. Uber, unlike Lyft, seems wiling to pre-schedule a pickup, online, without needing to go cell phone. However, the software says "5 minutes from your location." Does this mean I have to locomote five minutes to get to them, or just that the driver would be s...

#linux #tyro #troubeshooting Here's an amazing find/ discovery: My keyboard's gotten so unreliable, and my mouse input as well, that I've been using an external keyboard for some time. I finally went back and disabled the stylus input--on this machine xinput disable 20--and damned if the wonky keys seem to have unwonkified. The next step will be to see whether crontab -e @reboot xinput disable 20 worked, as i've never pulled a crontab before. No idea what I&...

#spam At one point, months ago, I ordered wholesale dentifrice from an outfit called US Dental *. They sent me many emails inviting me to reorder. Earlier today i asked them to take me off their email blasts. This evening i received two emails from them, selling autoclaves, or purporting to do so. This time I decided I had to set up a filter to block them. It took a little doing: I discovered that these last two messages were disguised as coming from my edress. What a nasty business.

#University #Libraries I'm psyched about access to the local university library. UMaryland-College Park has greatly reduced costs for geezers who apply to fill unclaimed seats. Today I was able to find and legally download the full text of the 2009 English translation of Dialogues of Love, written by Abravanel, a.k.a. Leone Ebreo, in 1535. Here's Renaissance discourse,, admixed with a Sephardic perspective. Imagine meeting such a mind. Later, I was able to determine that the answers...

#HealthyBaking #Improv #DiabetesFriendly Monkfruit #non-pet chia These worked fine. WW flour, greek yoghurt, some fresh lemon zest and ginger, bicarb, baking powder, egg, peanut butter, chia seed, monkfruit extract, and just a little butternut squash. Light, tasty, and given the baker, of course freeform rather than constrained by muffin tins. I punted an overstressed friend's call while I popped them in the oven cleaned my hands, and emptied my bladder. Then I called her back to reassure...
