I am totally blind, and I am interested in archiving rare software such as old screen readers and speech synthesizers. I am also an audio and mythology nerd.

I was just sent an updated DoubleTalk PC NVDA addon. https://datajake.braillescreen.net/TTS/SynthesizersForNVDA/doubletalkpc.nvda-addon

A software emulation of the Doubletalk PC is now available as an NVDA addon. A build of the project can be found at https://datajake.braillescreen.net/TTS/SynthesizersForNVDA/doubletalkpc.nvda-addon. The GitHub repository where this project is being developed can be found at https://github.com/daiverd/doubletalk-pc.

If by chance there are any working BrailleNote/VoiceNote Apex units by 2029, I will be amazed. For context, the Apex was released in late 2009, and lately many units have been showing signs of dying, such as bootlooping and the flash memory getting corrupted. To anyone who still has a working Apex, consider yourself lucky, and back up any important data.

The good news, I got a VoiceNote Apex QT. The bad news, it is bootlooping. I am not too surprised, and I am not going to bother returning it either. I have always felt the Apex was one of the glitchiest BrailleNote models ever produced, and I guess I have living (or dead) proof rite here.

I just created a pickup coil recording of the bootlooping apex. Lossless version: https://datajake.braillescreen.net/OtherAudio/ApexBootloop.flac

There is a modern Klatt formant synthesizer in development called SharpVox. If anyone is interested in playing around with it, a web UI can be found at https://bytesizedfox.dev/sharpvox.

I am thinking about developing a new DECtalk speak window application. I already have a name for it, DTPad. I have my own ideas, but I am curious as to what functions you would like to see in a perspective modern DECtalk speak window.

Apparently if you use NVDA and happen to own a cat, your cat now has the ability to solve math equations, as long as your NVDA is up to date. Translation for those who didn't catch on: NVDA 2026.1 uses MathCAT for interacting with math content.

For anyone interested in older assistive technology (namely screen readers and speech synthesizers) I am now hosting a mirror of the Vintage Access Git repository on my website. The original can be found at https://github.com/nstockton/vintage-access, and the mirror is at https://datajake.braillescreen.net/vintage-access.

Version 3.0 of the Aureal a3D SDK includes a weird audio file named Scooter.mp3. I found the SDK in the following GitHub repository: https://github.com/oxiKKK/A3d-SDKs.

Apparently today can't be found, as it is April 4th. Yesterday was a forbidden day, and the day before that required payment.

For me, writing documentation is one of the hardest tasks when getting a project ready for it's initial release. This is especially true for something that most likely will only get used by other nerds with too much time on their hands.

I was today years old when I discovered Windows Media Player on Windows CE plays MP2 audio streams at reduced quality. For 44100 Hz, the output is 11025 Hz, and for 48000 Hz, the output is 12000 Hz. In all cases, the bit depth is reduced to 8, and the number of channels is the same as the original stream.
