Went to see M&G last night. Pretty disappointing. It didn’t feel like there was a discernible structure: some stuff happened, then some more stuff happened, then some more stuff happened. And by “stuff”, I mean a succession of fights between a monosyllabic tin man with his magic rubber sidekick and a CG monster of the minute. A script as predictable as it was threadbare, orchestrating characters I had no reason to give a shit about. If this is the best the Star Wars series can do now, ti...

@axemonkey just make the whole UI a clickable image map and call it a day.

New cable day! 😅 Two coloured cables for the studio, coloured so they’re easily visible for any students (“use the purple cable”). Two longer cables intended for live use, with silent jacks on to minimise the risk of plugging noise through a PA. All Van Damme cables with neutrik jacks. #gearsquad

Interesting role just popped up for an operations and outreach person in a Berlin based music tech company: https://www.futurephonic.co.uk/pages/join-the-team (Not affiliated in any way but thought some of my circle might be interested! #jobs #FediHire #GetFediBHired

I’m enjoying #Plini’s new album, An Unnameable Desire (even though I think that’s a terrible title…). It’s not as instantly accessible as some of his previous stuff but rewards repeated listening. #NewMusic

Don’t know if any of you folks are Scar Symmetry/Per Nilsson fans but you should get on his Patreon. He just spent 90min with a group of about 15 of us on Zoom walking through Cryonic Harvest in detail, talking us through his compositional approach, harmony, implementation of voice leading, and so on. Fascinating.

I just had to use a site that use Sumsub to verify ID for AML/KYC stuff. Fine. What wasn’t made clear though was that Sumsub cheerfully keeps copies of your ID documents - they claim securely, but who knows. So be warned - if you come across this verification platform, make sure you at least delete your uploaded docs (and probably your whole account) once the verification is done. #datasecurity #privacy

Ugh. Apple Podcasts just popped up a full screen ad for… something. I dunno what it was because I dismissed it so fast. Don’t need many of those before I switch to another podcast app.

We have quite a sheltered garden and we often see fox families this time of the year. Just one cub plus (presumably) mum out this year. It’s quite early in the day for them to be out - previous years they’ve been most active at sunset. Fox cub zoomies are the cutest. #wildlife #UrbanFox #spring #garden

I just feel it's worth congratulating #bristol council and #firstbus #firstgroup for managing to set the car park and bus fares at that precise point where it’s still cheaper for me to drive and park (not to mention massively more convenient) to get my family into town rather than getting the bus, which is presumably what they set out to do. Nice one.

Just replaced the bushings on the push-in tremolo arm on my Jem. Holy crap that was fiddly. What a terrible design. #guitar

Well, this is a deceptively tricky little lick. Looks simple enough - almost a scale run - but moves between 2 and 3 notes per string. I could strictly alternate pick it (which is how the original was played) but that does mean changing the pick escape direction in the second half while moving from the B to the D string. Or, cheat, and pull some of the notes off, which means I don’t need to change the pick angle. Hmm… #guitar #practice

Really thrilled with my youngest student - for the first time, I played her a short phrase, she concentrated on what interval she was hearing, and applied her knowledge of fretboard interval shapes to accurately play back to me what I’d just played. No fumbling or hunting. Really pleased for her. #guitar #teaching

I’ve got quite a lot of guitar sheet music/tab books. I learned the songs from them basically fine. But now I’m teaching and really digging into the details, I’m finding quite regular mistakes. They range from transcriptions which are plain wrong, with notes not on the recording, to technical errors eg. incorrect bar durations. Two errors in the first 11 bars of Nothing Else Matters in the official Cherry Lane book alone! I wonder if they added mistakes on purpose to detect theft? #guitar

Headsup - Bitnami have just removed a load of docker tags/images from Docker Hub. If you use any Bitnami images it's worth checking that you're still going to be able to start new containers and update image references. We'd built a system using Redis, and it's now broken because of this. We'd normally push third-party images to our own registry but it looks like someone forgot to do that in this case (that someone being me). Don't be like me. #...

In case anyone's interested, I made a Big Ol’ Playlist of everyone I could find on Tidal who’s playing at #ArcTanGent this year: https://tidal.com/playlist/e6042138-c70d-48e1-b672-28c2e34ab231 (Tidal has an increasing problem with artist mix-ups, but hopefully I weeded out the couple that sneaked in - let me know if you see any mistakes). I daresay one of the many playlist exporters could convert this into your music platform of choice.
