Since everyone loved my last post on this topic, NASA just dropped a new coloring book about the sun: “Journey Through the Heliosphere: The Sun-Earth system in Color” #nasa #color https://science.nasa.gov/learning-resources/science-activation/new-nasa-heat-coloring-book-blends-art-science-and-cultural-perspectives/

Science takes all types of contributions and this is a great example of recognizing volunteer and community contributions when the rise to the level of co-authorship. #nasa #citizenscience #openscience https://science.nasa.gov/get-involved/citizen-science/650-nasa-volunteers-have-co-authored-scientific-papers/

While producing foundation models is interesting, it is even more interesting when they are put into production. In space! #nasa #ai https://science.nasa.gov/science-research/ai-foundation-model-in-orbit/?utm_source=general&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=ocsdo

One of my favorite recent highlights from NASA research is this data release from the BioSCape project. It is an audio data set to track the ecosystem and compare with remote sensing in one of my absolutely favorite regions of the world! #NASA #OpenScience https://science.data.nasa.gov/learn/blog/bioscape-biodiversity-audio-dataset?utm_campaign=ocsdo

I was looking for something else on the NASA website when I came across this collection of letters that Astronaut Jerry Linenger wrote to his 14 month old son during his stay on the Mir space station in 1997. https://www.nasa.gov/history/SP-4225/documentation/linenger-letters/letters.htm Such an interesting glimpse into life on a space station. # NASA

Once again, I thought I bought enough bags of candy for Halloween. I thought 20 bags would be enough and I thought it was a slow night, but I ran out of candy with 45 minutes still to go. So many great costumes by the kids and such excitement in the neighborhood! #happyhalloween https://mastodon.social/@crawfordsm/113405264663151860

I have gotten my first question on “are the Artemis II images real?” My first thought was: Yes they are real! If they were faked, the toilet wouldn’t have broken. The Universe is this beautiful and we can do amazing things when we work together. https://www.nasa.gov/artemis-ii-multimedia/#images

I am very excited to share that NASA has selected 15 open source projects under the Open Source Tools, Frameworks, and Libraries call. This will provide $15M to these projects over the next five years. These projects support our missions, data repositories, and our scientists. #OpenScience #opensourcesoftware #NASA https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasa-funds-open-source-software-underpinning-scientific-innovation/

I really like the CERN open hardware policy - something to aspire to! CERN makes its technologies broadly available to society and has introduced open hardware licensing as a key mechanism to achieve this goal. Open hardware designs are made available through the Open Hardware Repository. The legal basis for the sharing of open hardware is enabled through variants of the CERN Open Hardware License.(continued in next post) https://cds.cern.ch/record/2835057/files/CERN-OPEN-2022-013.pdf #CERN...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@crawfordsm/116329229032033234 The Artemis II science team did put together an Open Science and Data Management Plan for their mission. My very small part in all of it was reviewing it and providing comments. It was very exciting to read about the observations both of the moon and the trip that the astronauts will be doing! #OpenScience #nasa
