I remain 100% convinced that the ‘AI Mode’ tab now lurking at the left in Google’s results pages will at some point be switched to the default, and then most – or even all – of the other stuff (All, Images, Shopping, Videos, etc) will be quietly lobbed into a ravine.

    Apple, rightly, got a slap for rewriting news article headlines on-device in your notifications. But this is next-level shittery from Google, changing the headlines within search results. https://www.theverge.com/tech/896490/google-replace-news-headlines-in-search-canary-coal-mine-experiment

    @WiteWulf@cyberplace.social @Jayenkai@mastodon.social I’ve seen the works report. There is “unexpected” work to be done. It is what it is.

    In case you missed it, my column this weekend took a pop at AI and LinkedIn. (How the former is eating the tech world and how users on the latter are using AI to write the most inane crap imaginable.) https://www.stuff.tv/features/ai-is-eating-the-tech-world-and-your-favourite-gadgets-are-next/

    @llamasoft_ox@toot.wales Mm. Not sure what’s going on, TBH. I’m guessing either there isn’t trunking to ours and so they’re going to have to dig up a bit of road again, or hey don’t have resources for the 13m link across our front garden. On the plus side, at least I don’t have to worry about reconnecting the heating system in a hurry if it’s installed in June rather than around now.

    @sdarlington@mas.to I’ve disliked several, Monsters University perhaps being the nadir of those I’ve seen. But the soul now seems to be taking a kicking.

    Lemon Squeezy, an “easy peasy camera app for kids” is out. Full disclosure: made by someone I work with. But also: I’ve been playing with the app and I think it’s really nicely done. (Also, like the best of things designed with kids in mind, adults can use it too!) https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lemon-squeezy-kids-camera/id6751339211

    So much badness in this Pixar piece, from suggesting content merely inferring a character is LGBTQ+ would be “therapy” to the CCO saying his job is to make more commercial films that “appeal to everybody”. I guess the mouse finally crushed the lamp. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/mar/09/pixar-chief-lgbtq-plot-cut-elio-not-therapy-pete-docter

    Today’s column. Sure to win me lots of fans in AI circles & on LinkedIn (which I take a pop at too, because why not?) Weekend column gives AI and LinkedIn a kicking. So I imagine that’s probably not going to go down terribly well on LinkedIn.

    I like the look of Acme Weather and hope it moves beyond the US. Although Carrot Weather is my go-to now post-Dark Sky, more competition is a good thing. But it’s been weird to see folks fall over themselves about the multi-forecast model, as if that’s a new thing. eg https://weatherian.com/ …

    @sdarlington@mas.to Even on release, it was a weird Mac. Today, it’s an expensive relic. I can’t imagine anyone is buying them.

    @WiteWulf@cyberplace.social Courage! No, wait…

  • Post #535164

    @WiteWulf@cyberplace.social Yeah, it’s odd. When you dig into the details, there are all sorts of little bits and pieces of cost-cutting. But then, it’s $600. Even with this spec, that’s surprised a lot of people. (I still worry about the RAM limit though.)

  • Post #526393

    @WiteWulf@cyberplace.social Yep. Although that’s OK for most stuff. It’ll probably confuse some folks though, so that’s not ideal.

  • Post #523714

    @sdarlington@mas.to It’s astonishing the Mac Pro is still in the lineup. It’s a relic. That it can be outperformed on single core *by a phone* is just bonkers.

    So GamerCard has been delayed again & the price has gone up. When I first reported on this last year, I was suspicious of the controls and questioned the value. Now it costs more than a Retroid Pocket Classic – or 3x an RG Cube XX, both of which are fab Pico-8 doodads. https://retrododo.com/sinclairs-gamercard-delayed-with-price-bump-minor-upgrades/
