  A friendly reminder that if you use Mastodon to contact developers about feature requests or bugs and then auto delete your toots, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. Developers use links to those toots in bug trackers.

  Now that Apple is getting a handle on making Liquid Glass usable in its default state in iOS 27, I think they need to start addressing the customization of it all. The Fidelity app has always had a green button in the middle of their bottom navbar: something that they can’t really change without confusing a large customer base. Venmo and many others have similar issues. So this is how they adopted Liquid Glass. Yes it’s gross, but that’s what you get with an inflexible design system.

  Something that wasn't obvious to me and which has a huge impact on your developer experience in Xcode 27: The Device Hub sometimes doesn't kill CoreSimulator processes when you quit the app (not sure if this is a bug or intentional). Given that each device uses several hundred processes, the memory/processing impact is significant.   Anyone have any idea why the CompilationCache in DerivedData reports a size of nearly 40 GB but only uses 45 KB on disk? Talk about a red herring while trying to clean up after Xcode 27!

  It occurred to me the other day that tvOS is the only remaining Apple platform where you don't have to worry about size or aspect ratio changes in your user interface. Until Apple figures out how to make the TV industry change 😂

  We got rejected for a TestFlight build with Liquid Glass. Test Details: “Re-built with OS 26 and Liquid Glass.” Rejection: “2.1.0 Performance: App Completeness - Does the app have any new features?   Reason #52,764 why developers hate App Review. You work your ass off all summer getting things ready to submit on the day that Apple starts accepting submissions for its new OS versions. And you get 13 binaries uploaded on that day. And 12 of them are approved within an hour or two. And one of them has been "In Review" for over 48 hours.   Whoever did the ◀ ◀ REW graphic for Apple's homepage today has never used a one-bit display with Chicago. Besides the arrows being impossible to render, the glyphs in the text didn't have the standard 6:9 ratio. Also lots of anti-aliasing which is kind of hard to do when your only choices are black or white 😉 I pretended to be Susan Kare and fixed it, bottom is the original, top is my interpretation.

  @samhenrigold I loved your latest essay. I was that kid (albeit in 1976, not 2006). Since then, the hardest thing to do is keeping that spirit alive and pushing to find new things. I think we both have that trait, too.

  I’ve seen the first evidence that someone who understands user interaction is driving the bus at Apple. In the first release of iOS 26, the system sharing sheet had a More … button to expand the sheet (first image). The problem was that as soon as you pressed that button it was replaced by another action, which you were unlikely to see because your eye was focused in the tap area (red highlight, second image). Confusing because what I was looking for was not in the expanded area! 1/2

  @siracusa Fun fact: “performance” and “efficiency” are stringly typed in both the kernel and I/O Registry: $ sysctl -a | grep "hw.perflevel" $ ioreg -l -b -p "IODeviceTree" -r -n "cpus" ("cluster-type" will be either “P" or “E”) I can't imagine how they are going to change the meaning of “performance" without breaking a bunch of other low-level things.
