The fact that Nolan cut the “Nobody’s killing me!!!” bit from his movie is just proof that he does not get and never has gotten the character. Him saying the joke is too linguistically complex to do in English is silly given that generations of English speakers have gotten it and laughed at it, it’s a funny bit that really gets to the core of who this guy is: someone who delights in his own cleverness, who thinks his way through problems, who understands the way people work

Silly things I have been yelled at for On Here: -critiquing a tv show because the director might see it (?) -being a fake Southerner (?) because I typo’d “y’all” -faking (?) being bullied for attention (?) because I made a joke about forgiving your childhood bullies and then gently burying them alive in the sod -joking about a label on a plastic water bottle (never ever joke On Here)

My favorite part of Lee Cronin’s The Mummy was when the dad asks the History 101 professor if he can translate hieroglyphics and I leaned over to my brother and whispered “those aren’t hieroglyphics they’re hieratic” and a second afterwards the history guy said to the dad “Those aren’t hieroglyphics, they’re hieratic”

I’m currently reading Weavers, Scribes, and Kings: A New History of the Ancient Near East and one of the earliest examples we have of someone using cuneiform to actually write words instead of just recording pictographs of goods is a scribe who was totaling up goods and who signed his name on his lists, and apparently one of the only things we know about him from his record keeping was that he was bad at math
