From I love Amy Unfortunately for this girl (and for everyone else) all countries are mostly made up of stupid people.

  • Infra Arcana is the most brutal game I have ever played

Roguelikes are infamous for their ruthlessness: instant deaths that could only be prevented with spoilers, early game hell gating most of the game for those who aren’t able to learn all the intricacies of the system, many ways to permanently cripple your character in one wrong move, unbalanced classes / builds with no clear indication on what’s a good choice for a beginner… Some games like DCSS and Brogue see this as a fundamental flaw of the genre. Others lean into it instead, turning pain...

  • [DCSS] Crawl's bait-and-switch boss

(DCSS = Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup) It started as a goofy suicide performed by Edmund the dumbass who turned my ice beast into a fucking dragon. And then suddenly the dragon is against ME and Blorkula appears out of nowhere with a wand of charming. Imagine a more epic appearance. On an unrelated note, now I have two wands.

  • [Caves of Qud] TIL: beguiling a siphoned creature dooms said creature to slow death

Beguiling: ability that forces a creature to become the caster’s companion; Siphon Vim: transfers health from a creature to the caster for several turns. I got attacked by the puma and tried to fight back with Siphon Vim but quickly realized I’m not gonna win so I tried to beguile it and sure enough it worked. But then it just kept losing health until it died :c

  • May the strong religious focus of Grimstone be a mockery of Nintendo of America's censorship of Christian imagery during the NES days?

Back in the NES days games that were localized for American audience heavily censored any overt Judaeo-Christian imagery or reference to death. Churches no longer featured crosses, the Death spell was renamed to “RUB”, and the Kill spell was renamed to “XXXX”. UFO 50 games notably don’t really touch upon Christian stuff at all. Except one game - Grimstone. It’s a very Final Fantasy-like JRPG set in Wild West except the continent somehow ended up in Hell itself. The local religion is very Chr...

  • Curing Ironshank in Caves of Qud made me feel like I'm playing NetHack

Curing Ironshank in Caves of Qud made me feel like I'm playing NetHack CoQ’s main quest inevitably forces you to delve into Golgotha (ancient sewers or something like that) to retrieve a broken robot. Black slimes dwell there and they will likely afflict you with “stiff legs”. And then after some time your movement speed will start decreasing while your armor will increase. That kinda sucks. Ironshank maxes out at -80 movement speed penalty - 5 times lower than the default movement spee...

  • Kayinworks - Lunacid is Unchained from its Inspiration

Modern takes on old games are some of my favorite indies and this blog post explains the appeal really well. Lunacid is kind of like King’s Field and Shadow Tower but in the end the developer is KIRA, not From Software, so the game will feel different no matter how close to the original formula it is.

  • Golden Krone Hotel - a roguelike for vampires and their beloved bats (also tidbits about DCSS)

Golden Krone Hotel - a roguelike for vampires and their beloved bats (also tidbits about DCSS) I’m gotta admit: I love vampires. Not as a friendly neighbor who drinks ethically sourced blood but as an evil monster who hunts for humans’ blood and turns into bat/fog/wolf at will. (If you don’t want to read about Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, skip to the next section.) My first experience with vampire as a playable character in a roguelike was Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup. Vampire in DCSS was inte...

  • Warriors in Dark Souls 2 have such a lame mid-game compared to mages

TLDR: my warrior fully upgraded their main weapon and now face a deficit of titanite chunks to upgrade other weapons, severely limiting my build in time when mages gain several new awesome spells as well as resources to upgrade their pyromancy flame and catalyst. I’m replaying Dark Souls 2 (SotFS) after years of not touching the game and generally not spending much time with Souls-likes. I went for a warrior type, focusing on swords and crossbows. Despite not having access to any magic, I h...

  • [DCSS] How the scroll of butterflies from the hunter start saved my run in Zot:5

(DCSS = Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup) It was a normal frog archer run with my fearsome amphibian and their battlemage ancestor shooting and conjuring their way through the dungeon. Between my huge damage output (thanks Harm!) and my constantly Idealized ancestor, the run was extremely easy. Thus, I entered Zot:5. After clearing the rest of the floor, I switched my Harm amulet to another one with -Tele to prevent teleport traps and got to the Hall of Zot. Unexpectedly, orb guardians weren’t...

Gajim was gnomed and I'm angy (Gajim was gnomed since June actually, Void Linux repos didn’t update to the new iteraction until a few days ago though so I wasn’t aware.) Gajim was the best XMPP client for desktops, with a nice UI and all the features I’d ever need in a messenger (YMMV). So of course it should have been turned upside-down with a UI redesign that removes compatibility with GTK3 themes while also looking extremely out of place on my system. Modern GUI design suck SO MU...

I literally started reading manga in hope that it will distract me from a roguelike that I’m also addicted to but it proves to be too efficient, distracting myself even from sleep!!!

You know it’s an edit because there’s “Nimi”, “mastered” and “Dark Souls” on one screen.
