<p>Howdy! I'm the nerd who's building <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Emissary" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Emissary</span></a> - an ActivityPub server for building custom social applications on the Fediverse.</p><p>My first app on this platform is a music sharing server for indie bands, called <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Bandwagon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Bandwagon</span></a>. And now I'm also working on <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Atlas" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Atlas</span></a>, a social mapping server for adding Federated annotations to places in the real world.</p><p>If you'd like to talk about any of my projects, feel free to DM me here, or on Signal (@benpate.5280)</p><p>⁂</p>

So, what would “Better Safety Tooling” on the Fediverse look like? And, what would meaningfully help the Fediverse to serve more people? — Tagging @laurenshof@indieweb.social because you had some interesting insights I’d LOVE for you to expand on :)

A developer in Korea just built a Fediverse server that runs directly on CloudFlare. /r/fediverse users responded: "this is cancer" "you are a horrible person" ??? Can you please help me with a genuine question: what would make the #Fediverse a more welcoming place? Yes, humans are just grumpy sometimes. But a real solution can't just be more HOA members reading the rules at the door. What do YOU think would make a difference here?

#Emissary is currently undergoing its first colonoscopy - a full QA scan by a third-party QA company.. I&#39;ve done these in the past with other software. They&#39;re always informative, always make the software better, and are always a tremendous pain in the ass to fix. When the anesthesia wears off, I&#39;m gonna need a cookie.

Hello @HolosSocial@mastodon.social 👋🏻 We are talking about you over in the E2EE group messaging discussion - specifically about your “Follow a Note” proposal for Holos. https://github.com/swicg/activitypub-e2ee/issues/56#issuecomment-4780657551 Your design may solve one of the big issues we are having with the spec for private, encrypted groups, so I am hoping you can take a look at our conversation and weigh in on this idea. And, if everyone likes where this goes, we might publish it as an F...

Sorry Google. It's not me, it's you. Yeah, you've made the go-to web browser for years now, but I'll have to take my chances elsewhere. When you tried to installing a 4GB AI model on my machine without asking me, I had to finally draw the line. So tonight I'm 100% chrome free for the first time in years. Let's see what it does to my laptop battery life :) #enshitification

WeDistribute is back at it with another comprehensive run down of where we are as a technology. Great work as always, guys. And thanks for the checklist. Now I know what I’m doing this summer. https://wedistribute.org/2026/04/the-seven-deadly-fediverse-ux-sins-a-redemption-report-card/

If you haven&#39;t already read &quot; The Death of Spotify&quot; check it out -&gt; https://joelgouveia.substack.com/p/the-death-of-spotify-why-streaming (Jimmy) Iovine put it bluntly: “The streaming services have a bad situation, there’s no margins, they’re not making any money.” Let&#39;s all celebrate with a single tear 💧

I'm so excited for this next year on the #Fediverse. And the more I learn, the more I think #BridgyFed is going to become a foundational part of our network. I just posted my first messages from #Emissary across Bridgy to my account on BlueSky. I still have some things to fix (on my end, not theirs) but it worked. IT WORKED. NGL, I feel a little like Morpheus right now. And just think of what it will mean for every account set up on #Bandwagon...

Hey #FediDev community: Activity Intents are now supported (or soon to be) by the biggest #Fediverse apps out there: WordPress, Mastodon, and Loops (plus a tiny ones, like Forte, streams, PieFed, and Emissary) It's a fantastic step that brings the social web closer together 🍻 But there's more to do. What happens if I want to `Follow` but don't already have an account? Our UX still has gaps. Please check out FEP-7b29 ~ a simple way to connect the dots all the way through new user...

RE: https://mastodon.social/@HolosSocial/116416045056891863 ZOMG! #E2EE news on the Fediverse keeps getting better The @HolosSocial team is planning to implement the same encryption standard as Mastodon, Bonfire, and Emissary. When it lands, truly private messages should interoperate between all four platforms. This is an _absolute_win_ for open platforms and open APIs.

The beauty of the Fediverse, to me, is our rich diversity of experiences, abilities, and needs. Everyone brings something unique of themselves into this place, and everyone needs something different from it. That is a strength, not a weakness. Many come here with expectations that are different from mine ~ on any number of topics: AI, encryption, money, and more. None of us are “wrong“.. we all just need different things from this place. And that is beautiful.

Have you seen this news? #Mastodon just got funding to add end to end encryption into their software. So, some time next year, you’ll be able to send truly private messages to the vast majority of the #Fediverse Im so excited about this. Because it’s an open spec, this opens the doors for every Fediverse app to join the party. Yesterday, this project was a proof of concept. Today, Mastodon has turned it into a stampede. #E2EE https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/04/sovereign-tech-agency-fu...

Soooo... #JustBetweenUs There&#39;s already some big stuff in the works for 2026: The Social Web Foundation (@swf) has kicked off a project to bring real end-to-end encryption to the Fediverse. It&#39;s a big undertaking, with real financial backing from the @sovtechfund Check out the announcement: https://socialwebfoundation.org/2025/12/19/implementing-encrypted-messaging-over-activitypub/ And, I&#39;m very excited that #Emissary is one of the projects selected to participate i...

#Bandwagon just got a little better today, thanks to a great suggestion from @strypey The player now connects more tightly to your laptop, phone, or even bluetooth speaker.. so that all your hardware media control buttons (like play/pause/skip) now work inside the album you&#39;re playing on Bandwagon. That&#39;s enough for today, but there&#39;s more in the works coming soon. And let me know: what do YOU need to make Bandwagon better?

Check this out: https://clip.place/w/ajgJ5Hi69bbbxHCK3nXNdj I just published a video of the new &quot;end to end encryption&quot; protocol for ActivityPub in #Emissary. The UX is rougher than I&#39;d like, but you can see the client app is coming along nicely. Today, it sends and receives messages using MLS, a widely used industry standard and successor to the Signal protocol. By June 2026, it should be ready for you. For more details on the project and my progress, see: https:...

@silverpill@mitra.social @mariusor@metalhead.club @trwnh@mastodon.social I e*love* this idea- especially in principle. I say that because I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this and how it would be used in practice. Do you think you could post an example workflow (or three) to demonstrate how this would work? I get that objects could be added to client-defined collections (very cool) but if object/collection IDs don’t have predefined semantics, how will I know where to look to ge...

@evan @tess I wish I had a hard number on what I though it&#39;d take &quot;to be a maintainer&quot; &quot; It depends&quot; *feels* like a cop out, but: - Is the code stable &amp; well written? - Or is it spaghetti code that just mostly runs? - Is it a niche app? Or super-popular that everyone uses? - Or does Russia *really* want data off one of your servers? The curve could easily go from negligible (0-5 hrs/week) to being 60 hrs+ for months My work is 30-40hrs/wee...

A couple days ago, I saw a post here about a literal nazi newsletter hosted on #Substack. I won&#39;t repost it because I don&#39;t want red and black swastikas in my timeline. I sent a note to their &quot;terms of service&quot; team asking for clarification, hoping they would say &quot;oh wow, thanks..&quot; and do something about it. Or maybe at least, they might say &quot;gosh, this is bad, but they&#39;re not actually doing anything illegal.&quot; But...

There&#39;s a lot of energy on the #Fediverse right now to discuss/find a #Federated alternative to #Discord using #ActivityPub. @strypey suggested that I put this out there to anyone who&#39;s thinking about it. We could probably rebuild most of Discord&#39;s features as an #Emissary inbox without doing a lot of back end code. I&#39;m too swamped to start on this right now. But if you&#39;re a great HTML+CSS designer, I&#39;m able to give some time to a team who wants...

I just signed up for the #FediForum "Un-Workshop" coming up in March. Who else is planning to sign in? 🙋♀️🙋♂️🙋♀️🙋♂️🙋♀️🙋♂️ "Growing the Open Social Web" was already on my bingo card for 2026. I have my own ideas, but I'm more excited to hear what others have to say. https://fediforum.org/2026-03-growing-open-social-web/ If we blame misinformation on social media for the trouble in our democracies, then growing the #Fediverse (responsibly) may be our best path forward.
