pl wishlist: pure immutable-by-default FP, eagerly evaluated with optional lazy evaluation notation, a subset of the most commonly used GHC extensions, sized types, control over memory allocation, designed for fast compile times. Outputs native binaries for supported platforms.

Apologies on boosting an LLM post on proofs and PBT. I hit that one too quickly.

Stream is on tonight. There’s a storm warning in the area. Might lose power if things go south. We’ll try to ride it out. 8:10pm ET https://twitch.tv/agentultra

After a little more than nine months, I'll finally be a working again. Landed a staff+ software developer role!

The pressure to finish Black Fort just went up a bit.

Added two more strong monsters to Black Fort: DESPAIR and FURY. Added status effect: RAGE. Added BALM item to soothe status effects. Thinking about adding a "Give Up" action. Stop. Await the inevitable. Game over. #gamedev

Going to start up the stream and work on my game, Black Fort. Working on some pixel art, programming, and game design. https://twitch.tv/agentultra #gamedev #raylib #c #aseprite

It has been a while since I posted one of these and I'm still on the hunt for work! I'm a senior+ level software developer with 20+ YOE, based in Canada, ET. Most of my work experience has been on the back-end: distributed systems, web applications, services, systems-level projects, infrastructure, etc. I am flexible and can work on a wide range of projects. I work in several languages: C, C++, Haskell, Javascript, Python. I can handle OCaml, Lisp, C#, F#. I am Rust curious....

An updated MISERY monster... now with more fingers! Adding more content to Black Fort. #gamedev

Cleaned up the art a bit and landed MISERY in the game, first of the hard monsters in Black Fort. #gamedev

Adding special attack for MISERY in Black Fort, refactoring some UI code and adding dialogs to make messaging/telegraphing work better. I'm enjoying this phase of the project, systems are coming together and I'm beginning to focus on shoring up the game design and shaping it into whatever it will end up being. #gamedev

"Can I write a generic `Maybe` container in C and give it functor methods?" A Saturday morning coffee thought and spontaneous coding session.

Nobody writes about Haskell with the enthusiasm of a 15 year old edge lord they way they do about Go and HTML. In my head it sounds hilarious. Especially if the author was actually a 29 year old with too much of their personality invested in irony.

Worked on the garden today with my partner and our kid. A robin decided to join us and hang around while we worked. He seemed happy. Pulling up weeds helped him access the grubs underneath.

Are there any tech companies that are refusing to use slop-coding tools?

One full interview loop this year. One. No offer. The industry seems to be doing great.

Slop is indeed the future of GenAI programming unless you can make sure the training data has only bug-free, well-architected code that future developers will understand; that the alignment doesn’t over-fit to the training data, and you can continually update that training data set with enough examples of all the new innovations. At that point you might as well be writing the code yourself. You can’t steal enough examples from the bleeding edge to keep up. These systems generate code based off...

My friend. Your astonishment that one can simply write code is what's holding you back. You have a tool in front of you that has no masters. It's just bits and bytes all the way down. You can make it do anything. You don't need a subscription.

When you tell people, "I'm making a game in C with a couple of libraries," most often they will reply with some kind of shock or disbelief. You're not using Unity? You don't use Unreal 5? You're not vibe coding it? How do you get anything done? How much code do you think it takes? It's like... not that much when you start working on it. Don't be so obsessed with frameworks and tooling. Be obsessed with understanding and learnin...

Carl Sagan delivered some great speeches. It makes me angry that the administrations of his days were ignorant of the message and did nothing in response. Still relevant however and worth repeating: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/Y7WELBGm268

Alrighty, progress on the merchant UI. Merchants have inventories. I added some icons for the items in game. The merchant event dialog displays the inventory in a neat little grid. Didn't make any progress yesterday... just had time to apply for jobs and pass out for the afternoon as I wasn't feeling well. Much better today though! #gamedev

We generally want systems that require more than on person to royally mess up before anything bad could actually happen barring events outside of our control. Deploying a code change to a network service, for example. Now you’re telling me that the future of our industry are autonomous computer programs with no accountability or ability to think, reason, or care of the liability of the company operating it can rewrite and deploy thousands of SLOC changes to such services? And when it blows up...
