Not just indie. The only people in the game industry on sensible career paths are the people who aren’t directly involved in development.

My latest monthly dev log. I began a boss fight, gave some art direction and did a talk. https://adammcdonald.itch.io/chrono-blazer/devlog/695327/march-2024-update

@raccoonformality Makes me want to hug my MiSTer.

@raccoonformality MiSTer FPGA, a hardware emulation device. It was thought N64 would be impossible on it, but there is an N64 core that is coming along very well and allows for extremely accurate N64 emulation.

Penny’s Big Breakaway is quite special, don’t sleep on it if you like platformers. But uh… read the tutorials and practice the moves. I found it unintuitive at first and was missing jumps because I forgot the most safe/basic type of jump existed. Once it clicks though, it’s a very smooth playing game with lots of room for expression. And my 4 year old likes it. I thought it would be too hard for him but he wanted to try it. He basically hands me the controller when the penguins show up.

Here's a boss fight I've been working on. It's funny to think of the original concept versus where it is now, but I love that kind of stuff in game dev. Just uncovering what's working and what isn't, finding the game that wants to exist under the surface. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIbKJvA8TN0

A new devlog about working on a boss. The first one I've ever made in any game! https://adammcdonald.itch.io/chrono-blazer/devlog/713727/april-2024-update

I've been working on this boss fight for a little while and it still has some rough edges, but I think it's finally in a state where I feel good about moving on to other things. I'm finding it fun to play as it is, so it'll be interesting to see how fresh eyes react to it once I integrate it into the flow of the game.

Had an idea for a way to create an in-game map in Game Maker without having to draw (and update) a map by hand. Just volumes that check for collision and store a bunch of coordinates, then I use a tile map to draw in some pixels to create the map. Still essentially a prototype but it works! I’m amazed it didn’t cause a hit to performance or a crash or anything. I am still amazed at myself whenever I think of a way to program a feature and then it works, since I’m used to being bad at coding.

I gave a short talk at a local game dev meetup back in March. The video was just uploaded. Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EX5aGBGtnZg

I’m playing and enjoying Rogue Legacy 2, but damn this game is a grind. I could theoretically get good, but there’s also stuff you need to hope you get randomly (gear blueprints) that is just like… rare? I very seldom come across them at all but there appear to be dozens more beyond what I have 25 hours in.

Hi, I've been neglecting this place for a while. I'm still not a fan of the other place and haven't really been posting there either. Here's a devlog about my game that I wrote tonight! https://adammcdonald.itch.io/chronoblazer/devlog/804265/summer-2024-progress-update

It’s comforting that despite everything happening in the world, Mastodon is still full of obscure tech ramblings I barely understand.

Feeling pretty good about my latest iterations on the layout in this part of the game, including some new enemy types, new enemy behaviours, some art updates, and a completely redone proximity door. #chronoblazer #shmup #screenshotsaturday
