  For the first time in our 19 years together @jaymeb has decided we need to read a book at the same time. So I ordered two used copies from AbeBooks, a business I am finding more and more useful. I irrationally think of buying used books on the same level as adopting a rescue pet. Those books are just looking for a good home. I've grown so much since the time when I would only adopt new, purebred books. #Bookstodon #Reading

  So I've been using NixOS with Gnome (random, default) since I got this ASUS A16 laptop last July and - although there is a learning curve and I could not have done it without Nix mentorship from @rochecompaan - it has been exactly what I needed from the hardware and software for a couch/homelab devops laptop: reliable, stable, boring, useful. #NixOS #ASUS

  I'm annoyed Google Calendar doesn't use url params for view configuration (which calendar is visible in which display format) so you can't have a pinned tab with exactly what you need. More motivation for me to keep working on de-Googling.

  Have you ever seen one of those montages of failed crewless rocket test launches where the rockets go up a little but then teeter over or slide backwards and explode on the launchpad? I'm not against using AI wisely (if it can be produced wisely). What the Trump administration is doing with AI is the equivalent of putting people on all those failed test launches. And there is an old saying from somewhere, "We the People…". #policy #Trump

  Quite the curling commotion in Draw 1 at The Brier, where a sweeper’s broom handle broke under pressure sending him to the ice and carbon fiber shrapnel everywhere.   Ubuntu MATE crashed the other day while @jaymeb was just using the browser and then it started booting to initramfs prompt. I just booted into a USB live session involving fsck, lsblk, df, vgchange, mounting the boot drive and looking at syslog, and chrooting in. I can’t really see what is wrong. There were some PCI Bus Errors in the syslog. Also the end of syslog was several lines of just “&^” repeating. #Linux #Ubuntu #UbuntuMATE

  Compared to other sports, golf for example, there is surprisingly little discussion of the curling stone thrower’s form and how it plays into the weight thrown. The only discussion is really about whether the result was right or wrong for the intended shot. Thus, when it is said that someone needs a bit more or a bit less or to match the competitor’s previous shot, and sometimes timing numbers are tossed around, I don’t have any idea how they execute on that. #Curling
