July 2026 was the warmest month for average temperatures on record across the contiguous U.S., even surpassing the Dust Bowl. Sea surface temperatures are way above average in parts of the #Arctic as of last month, particularly in the Kara Sea Basin extending to around Svalbard and the Greenland Sea. This is also found in the Hudson Bay due to their very early sea ice melt-out. Data from NOAA OISSTv2.1.

Wednesday El Niño update - Record warmth continues in the key monitoring region called Niño 3.4, which is due to both the long-term warming of the tropics (climate change) and the developing El Niño. Overnight temperatures are warming up across much of the contiguous United States during the month of August. Wow - the average global sea surface temperature outside of the polar regions is currently tied for the all-time absolute hottest on record (in the NOAA/OISST dataset). The record was in 2024. More graphics like this at https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-briefings
