We’ve got this kind of motivation, only its going to datacenters for the benefit of a handful of trillionaire megalomaniacs, rather than for commercial grade infrastructure that benefits the public at large.

Fucking 90% of the books I read are “rare” That’s sort of the joke. These aren’t treasured first editions. They’re not shredding the Guttenburg Bible. These are single prints sitting in warehouses and abandoned libraries or dumps that nobody has read or carried about in decades. They’re rare because they never got a second edition. And the process of digitizing the book means disassembling it. So the copy (that nobody wanted) is destroyed as a result. The article is pure clickbait. These...

‘I’m over the moon’: New York’s small business owners rejoice as Mamdani cuts red tape
At a press conference in the Bronx, Mamdani listed some of the onerous policies getting the axe. Bodega owners will no longer need a separate license to sell the same products outside the store – like fruit and flowers – as inside. Restaurants will no longer need a “superfluous” frozen dessert permit to sell ice-cream on top of the permit already required to sell food. Barber shops will no longer have to renew their permit every year, instead doing so every three years. Street fair vendor permit...

ICE Mandates Dress Code After Killings and Botched Arrest
The new directives for ICE’s Employee Code of Conduct came in the wake of a botched arrest last week in Las Vegas by two ICE officers wearing hooded sweatshirts, with one attempting to pull a hood down over his face as onlookers recorded video. (ICE did not respond to a request for comment.) The officer attempting to make the arrest “looked like a kidnapper,” said one ICE official who spoke to The Intercept on the condition of anonymity to protect their livelihood. “Ending the era of ICE age...

Transgender ballot initiative could require genital exams for WA secondary school students
According to the initiative, students would have several options to confirm their sex: a visual genital exam, a lab test to determine their genetic makeup, or an analysis of testosterone levels in the blood. The genital exam, which a medical professional can conduct without touching the child, would likely be the most accessible option for most kids. … Conservative hedge fund manager Brian Heywood and his political action committee Let’s Go Washington are backing the measure. … Heywood s...

Switzerland bolted 5,000 solar panels onto a dam wall 8,000 feet up in the freezing Alps. The plant now makes three times more winter power than any farm down in the valleys
Up on the dam, almost everything that looks like a problem becomes an advantage. The plant sits above the fog line, in thin, clear air that lets far more sunlight through. The higher you go, the stronger and cleaner the sunlight becomes. Cold actually helps, because solar panels work more efficiently when they are not baking in heat. And then there is the snow, which acts like a giant mirror, bouncing extra light up onto the panels from below. Scientists call it the albedo effect, and...

This Forth of July, Stay Dazed and Confused
Okay guys, one more thing, this summer when you’re being inundated with all this American bicentennial Fourth Of July brouhaha, don’t forget what you’re celebrating, and that’s the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn’t want to pay their taxes.

Daughters of the American Revolution Live Up to Their Name by Rejecting Ban on Trans Women
After right-wing media outlets picked up the story with an anti-trans angle, implying there was a policy change that suddenly allowed trans women to join, rather than a clarification of existing bylaws, a group of DAR members began lobbying to ban trans women from the organization. A small percentage of members even left the organization after DAR leadership made it clear that trans members were welcome, per The Washingtonian. The DAR governing body rejected the first official proposal for byl...

Texas must pay millions to fix errors in Bluebonnet school materials, contract shows
The $8.4 million tab, first reported by FOX4 Dallas-Fort Worth, comes at a time when state leaders criticize school districts for a funding crisis they view as caused, in part, by poor planning and reckless spending. … Bluebonnet, an elementary and secondary school reading and math program that state leaders often tout as high-quality, comes with a $60 per-student incentive for districts that use it. As of last year, nearly 600 districts planned to use some of the materials. The K-5 readin...

South Carolina law legalizes pinball for youth, ending decades-old prohibition
States outlawed the games because of their associations with gambling, including South Carolina, which banned the game for minors in 1959. The new version of pinball with flippers grew in popularity throughout the 1960s and ’70s, even with bans in place. A 1974 California Supreme Court decision classified the game as one of skill and not chance, which led to states removing pinball prohibitions. South Carolina was the holdout. Playing pinball remained illegal for anyone under the age of 18...

Muslims at Texas GOP Convention told to leave party, country
Hussein said he was in disbelief that he was told to convert or leave — for the first time in his life — at a Republican convention with the tagline, “Unity drives victory.” That slogan, touted by the governor on press releases, placards, lanyards and even the elephant he procured to march through the convention hall, became a rallying cry for the state’s leaders and party nominees heading into November. If fractured, they warned, the party could lose the state to Democrats and their U.S. Sena...

It feels pretty easy when all you have to do is observe and give occasional instructions. When you have well-developed muscles, a thing can be trivial to accomplish for which others struggle. On the flip-side, if you refuse to do a thing because it is hard, you never develop the muscles that make the job easier. However you slice it, I’m sensitive to a trend of “This is too hard!” that stands in for “Someone should do this for me!” (or “I shouldn’t have to do this at all”), often without...

Chinese carmaker Seres patents voice-controlled "in-vehicle toilet"
The patent filing shows Seres’ plans for an onboard toilet that slides out from the bottom of a passenger’s seat with a push or through voice-activated commands. The loo will come with a fan and exhaust pipe to channel odours out of the car, according to the filing on China’s intellectual property administration seen by the BBC. Waste is collected in a tank that has to be emptied manually. The toilet also features a rotating heating element that evaporates urine and dries other waste. When...

Floating turbine towers above — the S1500 hovers to harvest wind at 131 feet
The S1500 floating turbine’s operating altitude is 4,921 feet above ground level, where wind speed moves about three times faster than at the surface. The advantage of this altitude (also referred to as vertical slice) can result in a power output up to 27 times higher than a conventional ground-based wind turbine of similar capacity. The capacity to generate one megawatt of electrical power (MW) with the S1500 system is comparable in size to what small wind power turbines normally generate (a...

Idk about “winning”, but definitely “flooding the zone so hard that you struggle to find normal music anymore”. Check out Bandcamp if you’re looking for “same vibe, different artist”. They’ve got a ton of musicians on the platform that do a great job of churning out period and style specific material that’s still human-made and different enough from the original that it doesn’t feel like the same song.
