#JukeboxFridayNight #birds Jeri has already posted Prince’s When Doves Cry - good on you, Jeri. Here’s the version by Quinton Tarver from Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film Romeo+Juliet, featuring very young Leonardo di Caprio and Claire Danes. (If you’ve never watched it, run not walk. Luhrmann brings the bard alive.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvOCyUbyPS8

There’s a scene in the film Chariots of Fire where runner Eric Liddell, played by Ian Charleson, reads this verse from Isaiah: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Here’s the film theme music by Vangelis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8a-HfNE3EIo As a personal link, this was filmed in part at my college on the day we all returned for the start of term. Gett...

InternetNZ election - boosts welcome. The voting tokens for the INZ election are out. The list of candidates with their statements is online at https://internetnz.nz/governance-and-reports/our-board/board-elections/2026-board-elections/ The remainder of this post advises how to vote tactically should you so wish. INZ uses a form of STV (*). Voters are asked to rank candidates from 1 to n, where n is the number standing. You do not have to rank all candidates. Clearly, if you want specific pe...

This book is amazing. It’s written by a Scottish prof of literature, who happens to live in NZ, about a prof of literature in Scotland. Well-written and keeps you guessing. Great character development. CW for most things, it’s a crime novel after all.

Back in the early 90s I was the NZ govt’s first ICT advisor, working for the Minister of ICT. A concept in vogue then was the Negroponte Switch, broadly this was the notion that phones shouldn’t be wired and TVs should, which was the opposite of the situation as it was then. Now, many of us don’t have what we have come to call landlines, and all streaming and some live TV is delivered over fibre. (I watched the rugby game tonight over fibre, for instance.) Seems Mr Negroponte was right!

Lay down your bundles of rags and reminders, And spread your wares on the ground. Lindisfarne with Meet Me On The Corner I have strong memories of my grandfather taking me as a child to the football and to the pictures in Newcastle, England, presumably so my mother and grandmother could go shopping together. Recently I went back to Newcastle and sat in the main square listening to Lindisfarne and The Animals, both fine bands from the city. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ch_5dB1FkqY #Jukebox...

I racked my brains for #Stereotypes #JukeBoxFridayNight and eventually came up with this. It has two links to the theme, the title of the band and the content of the lyric. Apologies if someone has already posted it. Ian Kilmister of Motörhead, aka Lemmy, lived life according to his values. You know I'm born to lose And gambling's for fools But that's the way I like it, baby I don't want to live forever He didn’t, but he certainly burned brightly Ace of Spades by Motörhead https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mbvWn1EY6g #LifeWellLived #JukeboxFridayNight

Since we’re doing mashups, here’s a track from American Edit by Dean Gray (geddit?) - Impossible Rebel. The whole album is a lot of fun and chock full of irreverent samples. Of course the music biz tried to sue it off the net with predictable results. Read more about the album on Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Edit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FYEqi72b-4&list=PLrpOJGxlgJwIEs9i9a0UjNs6iSS0QomI-&index=7&pp=iAQB8AUB #MusicMusiciansAndMashups #JukeboxFridayNight
