  A while back when visiting Kelvingrove Museum in Glasgow I heard the haunting sound of a Chinese flute nearby. Today, while visiting the Riverside Museum on my bike I heard it again - it was the same man - so I went to talk to him, only he couldn’t speak English nor I Mandarin. He used his phone translation app and I discovered his name is Gao Xijing, he’s 74 and from Xi’an - and when I told him I’d been to Xi’an to see the Terracotta Army his face lit up! What a lovely encounter! #Strangers

  Regular followers will know I am a big fan of the OM System TG-7 for underwater, macro and field work, where I usually shoot in RAW mode. But if you switch to JPEG there are a lot of effects filters available, so I tried it in the woods with the Dramatic Monotone art filter. I quite like the unedited results and think it opens up the possibility of capturing gritty, Moriyama-esque street photos, especially as the camera is so small and discreet. #Photography #BlackAndWhite #StreetPhotography

  I was people-watching in the sunshine and started to think about the many ways we humans choose to distinguish ourselves from others. It may be our clothes, our hair, the colours we dress in, body art or piercings, ostentation or even modesty. We also choose to dress in ways which make us fit in with like-minded people - our 'tribe', if you like - or just to stand out.   I've been using an old Soviet Helios 44m 58mm f2.0 lens on my Fujifilm XE3 to explore its famous 'swirly bokeh' and characterful glass. Plus, I'm adding a tiny amount of grain in post processing to further enhance the classic B&W film look. I like the combination, even if the manual focus on the lens is agonisingly slow - it seems too damped to me - and I might struggle in capturing people in street scenes.   This poor wee guy, a tree bumblebee, landed on our patio table and looked exhausted so I mixed up some sugar water solution and after a good slurp, coaxed him onto a piece of card and moved him to our azalea.   Rockpooling at the coast yesterday made me feel like a small boy again, only with a waterproof OM System Tough TG7 camera instead of a net and a bucket.   Now that the Spring leaves are on the trees I can push on with my second major project, exploring the Japanese philosophy of Komorebi. This is a word used to describe the look, atmosphere and feeling created when sunlight filters through leaves.
