There are people in this world who actually have acquired high-level expertise. You know what they all have in common? They have no need to embarrass themselves with ridiculously exaggerated bragging like this.

Hey, Mastodonverse, know what today is? Today's the 96th anniversary of the first appearance of particle accelerator technology in the literature - with Ernest Lawrence's publication of "On the Production of High Speed Protons" in the journal Science, back on October 10th, 1930.

It was 15 years ago today when results were announced of a 'timing anomaly' at the OPERA experiment - one with a 6.2σ statistical significance. The anomaly indicated an apparent observation of neutrinos with a velocity exceeding that of lightspeed, and the media took notice! 1/

Anyone else here remember that episode of South Park showing retired football players with brain damage? For no particular reason, I just happened to remember this expression on the face of this guy who wandered on to the field then pretended to bake an imaginary birthday cake.

So, here's where we are: Trump has proven himself impotent to actually fix what he promised. However, he has been able to make things worse. When actual problems become too prominent, he makes some superficial gesture to appease his sycophants. Sadly, for them, that's enough.

Decided to just get pizza delivered this evening, but was delayed a bit before eating it. In related news, did yinz know that an accidentally tipped-over 2L Coke bottle with only a partially secured cap will spray EVERYWHERE like an out-of-control fire hose? #GuessHowIknowThat https://mastodon.world/@Science_George/117044135054714551

44 years ago today, the world *(well, at least "our" world, that is!) lost Hugh Everett III, who introduced the world *(again, "ours") to the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics, which has influenced the physics community for generations. 1/ *(See what I did there?)

Today would've been the 104th birthday of @Fermilab's second, and longest-serving, Director - Leon Lederman. He opined that all of us are born physicists because as children we incessantly ask the right questions about every facet of our world - always asking "WHY?" 1/

Remembering a very dear friend on America's 250th anniversary of Independence Day today. Fifty years ago, a photo of her as Betsy Ross appeared in the newspaper due to her matching birth name. She always felt a little awkward about that, but I'm thankful she shared the memory.
