Hello typo.social, do I know anyone with (access to) a copy of Rosbeek 38 with the work of Pierre di Sciullo? I have a favor to ask.

Please share widely: After May 2027, I’ll no longer be a faculty member at Iowa State University. I’ll be looking for full-time work to start after that. (I could also start before the upcoming fall term, in August; or after fall term ends, and before the spring term starts in January.) I could really use your help with tips or information about, or connections, to searches and postings. But I’m at something of a professional inflection point, so I’m asking for your help as I look for positions...

Passing on a question from a friend: does anyone know of any apps/programs for youngsters to make fonts? The suggested analog was TinkerCAD, but for type design. I've suggested Rob Meeks's FontStruct, but maybe other folks have good suggestions?

After François Morellet’s Tirets 0°, 90° (oil on canvas, 1960). Took some doing to build in the gentle imprecision of Morellet’s original; still not perfectly happy with it, but I like it, so. Built with Python in @drawBot.

Project for my next intro Python/ @drawBot workshop. The animation timing will be tricky but fun to do.

The classic Hans Hilfiker Swiss Bahnhofsuhr is accomplished! Make sure you watch all the way around; getting both the second and minute hand movement, and the minute hand’s ‘waggle’ as it moves from one minute to the next, took some doing. Built with Python in @drawBot

A proposal for an optional studio course for this fall from a department colleague. When I read this, I wanted to throw my laptop across my office.

Happy to share this from my friends at Studio Gebr. Silvestri in Amsterdam. (Full disclosure: I have an essay in the book, and I think I indirectly suggested the title?) https://gebr.silvestri.nl/serious-play/serious-play/

‘Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, …

There’s still time to register for my online Python for Visual Designers workshop for Type@Cooper @coopertype Thursdays 6.30–9.30pm US Eastern from 26 March–14 May (8 weeks). You’ll learn the basics of creative coding and how to draw and manipulate vector shapes and raster images and set type with Python code in the free MacOS application DrawBot. We’ll work with variable fonts and make some basic animations as well—and work together on some larger projects too, like this animation of @letterro...

I see this book got some well-deserved love on @FontsInUse but Thomas’s wonderul Minérale to one side: I just finished reading it, and I can’t praise it highly enough. The phrase tour de force can be overused, but it’s perfectly apt here. Even if you think you aren’t that interested in the interconnections of global music: you are. Bonus: Boyd himself reads the audiobook, and it’s a treat. https://www.faber.co.uk/product/9780571360000-and-the-roots-of-rhythm-remain/
