I’ve been thinking about my relationship to companies like Google. For a while, being indexed by a search engine benefited me, but these days, it is much more likely that my work is scraped and repacked as AI slop, and that I receive nothing in return. The option of de-indexing oneself is generally considered to be amputating your own limbs, ensuring nobody will ever know you exist again. Another possibility occurs to me, although as a cave woman I could use the insight of someone smarter.

Patreon has added an algorithmic feed for everyone. “Creators and their fans deserve a better internet - and we’re building one.” Says their announcement. So your plan to personally build a better internet is to adopt all of the trappings of the very social media sites which helped create the problem? For now, there’s a second feed which only shows the creators you follow. For now. A reminder that the deal can always change.

I cannot believe SCOTUS just gutted the Voting Rights Act. I mean, I can believe it, it is exactly in character for this court, but also Jesus fucking Christ.

At this point it doesn’t even matter if Trump attempts to walk back his threats to commit genocide in Iran. It definitely doesn’t matter whether he, hypothetically, would choose nuclear weapons or conventional weaponry to do so. The fact that he ever considered it— and over oil!— is enough to demand action. We cannot “wait and see”. We cannot risk that he might change his mind. And we CANNOT keep living like this til 2028. This lunatic must be removed. Now. What the FUCK are we doing?

It’s been a weird couple days; I keep running into this talking point that “journalists won’t use Mastodon unless we incentivize engagement farming”. Meanwhile I’m having a *great* experience here, because I use it to— I dunno— actually talk to people and form relationships? I reject the premise that mastodon isn’t useful for reporters. I think it’s more accurate that modern news orgs use social media in purely extractive ways. You might get more reporters that way, but you won’t like them.

Howdy fam! You know the drill. I’m at #NoKings in #Seattle today. I’m hoping to do another piece on protest art; and I’ll say, so far I have not been disappointed! If you see me, don’t be afraid to say hi. I don’t bite (usually) If I have any live observations (and I already have a few), I’ll thread them here. Heads up to flex that mute button for a few hours it if it’s not your jam!

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the hollowing-out of software. Specifically, how do I protect myself from a formerly useful program auto-updating with vibe-coded (and potentially compromised) AI-slop? More and more development teams are getting axed. Their corpses are getting stuffed with cheap, rotten code that is at best unfit for purpose, and at worst actively dangerous. I can’t possibly track of it all. It seems a matter of time before something bites me.
