For one thing, you almost always get into camp and catch some fish, and the part about getting stranded becomes part of the adventure, making for a better story later. I mean, its hard to build suspense when you're telling about a trip that went smoothly from beginning to end. -John Girach #fishing #flyfishing #trout #bassfishing #outdoors

Between 620,000 and 700,000 died in the U. S. Civil war. About 500 of those were women soldiers in spite of the males only. Most women Civil War soldiers were not married. Some wanted to be with their boyfriends, others joined on their own to fight for the cause. Getting wounded or pregnant was a good way to get outed. When discovered and dismissed many women just joined another unit and continued the fight. #civilwar #ushistory

For my own part, I've never been able to manage anything like dignity while fishing and I never met anyone else who could manage it either. The few who tried all ended up looking like pompous fools, although to their credit, many of them came to realize that eventually to their credit, many came to realize that and would only fish with other pompous fools. -John Girach #Fishing #flyfish #outdoors

When a largemouth bass eats something the size of a frog, it opens its maw nearly as big around as its own head, and takes it in a single sweeping gulping swallow. The frog is floating quietly in the sunlight one second, swallowed whole by an unseen predator the next. A fisherman naturally loves to see this, but when you stop and think about it, it's sort of horrifying. -John Girach #fishing #flyfishing #bassfishing #fishingfriday

My opinion is that dew points in the mid '70's are not ideal.

I'm getting a little more used to living in northern Florida. It's still too hot and humid for us to spend time outdoors. No fishing, no photography, probably for a couple more months. Our daughter Sara is watching out for us and for that we are extremely thankful. I have access to the Bears, Blackhawks, and Cubs games on satellite and computer - very spiffy. This is where we will probably be for the duration, but I don't think it will ever be home. #florida #tallahassee #illinois...

90 degrees with a dew point of 68 degrees, and no wind? That's not my kind of weather for fishing. #fishing #flyfishing #bassfishing #trout

Do you know someone who owns a prostate gland? It's time to ask yourself or them when the last had a PSA blood test and heard the snapping of the latex glove. Check with your doc when you should get tested. And above all, don't take medical advice from someone on Mastodon!

A little further on I drove right past the place we were looking for and didn't realize it until we came to the landmark that told us we've gone too far. (When the directions include the phrase "you can't miss it" I *can* miss it and usually do.) #fishing #flyfishing #outdoors #Chicago #illinois #tallahassee #florida

I've always been a sucker for all the paraphernalia that bogs down the sport. Even as a boy the fishermen I admired weren't necessarily the ones who caught the most fish but the ones with the biggest and best stocked tackle boxes-tray after tray of brightly colored plugs and stylized scales or frog spots and the blankly staring eyes of cartoon characters. -John Girach #Fishing #FishingFriday #bassfishing #trout #outdoors

I still have my father's old tackle box just as he left it the last time he went fishing nearly a half century ago. I take it down from the pantry shelf & open it every few years for sentimental reasons. This is now done as a private observance, because in the past, I've shown it to collectors who all said it was a damn shame that the potentially valuable old lures weren't in mint condition in their original boxes but had actually been *fished*. -John Girach #...

Mid-March, he U.S. Postal Service will issue fishing lure themed stamps featuring in-line spinners, crankbaits, poppers, wake baits, and spoons. Depending on size, in-line spinners are very effective for trout, large and smallmouth bass, pike and muskie. *Full disclosure: My son is a USPS carrier and excellent angler. #fishing #flyfishing #trout #troutfishing #outdoors https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2025/0206ma-freshwater-fishing-lures-stamps-to-be-issued-march-13.htm
