That unsettling feeling when you are not at home and your self-hosted services aren't available anymore. After checking out the infrastructure, I discovered that my whole rack went down and everything in it rebooted: Fileserver, auxiliary smart home nodes, core switch and core router. But all of it just rebooted, it wasn't off for long periods of time. It cannot be the fuse or RCD, these wouldn't reset themselves, so it must be something else. I restarted all my services and starte...

Wait, at first I thought the AI exclusion on Codeberg is silly, but it's actually quite cool: It's fresh, untainted training data for new LLMs!

"Stromer! VERSTEHSTE!? WEGEN STROM UND SO UND ABER EIGENTLICH AUCH LANDSTREICHER. STROMERAUTO!!!!1!1!1cos(0)sin(pi/2) HAHAHA!" Infantile Scheiße.

Not to pat myself too much on the back, but the whole KNX framework that I have by now is just so awesome. I mean I spent a lot of time getting the Rust type system to do what I wanted it to do. Doing that pays off, everything just fits together really well. Off to starting a client library to talk to devices from a full-blown host for management purposes. I need to cook! And fuck the ETS!

KiCAD just ignoring Wayland has made it unusable in version 10. The 3D viewer just crashes, copying requires hammering CTRL+C until stuff is copied, repeated key input by holding a keyboard button just stops. It's extremely bad right now. Let's see how long they can ignore Wayland until just every distribution moved away from X11. edit: What I mean by "ignore": https://www.kicad.org/blog/2025/06/KiCad-and-Wayland-Support/ edit2: Launching it with QT_QPA_PLATFORM=xcb seems to...

Bestandsschutz! Yay!

I just left the heat pump running in cooling mode during the day for the last few weeks. Seems we slowly got rid of all the heat stored in the house and it just stays at 22-23°C now. The whole system has just so much inertia that it takes a while for things to happen. Same in autumn when we start heating. It always takes a few days until the temperature settles. Let's see what happens during the next few days when it gets warm again.

Funny how DigiKey delivers solder paste in a cooling bag to me and how I, after arrival, just put the whole thing uncooled on a shelf for 5-10 years until it's empty. Also the datasheet talks about a shelf life of 1 year. Weird.

The whole bulk 3€ customs fee per item group story that the EU now enforces on foreign packages makes me extremely angry. This essentially kills hobby electronics. I haven't ordered at Mouser or DigiKey in a while and I don't know how they are affected right now, but still: The whole idea is so fucking braindead. Instead of just getting rid of the 150€ customs free limit, they do this. I now have to make sure to order more than 150€ to get to pay "proper" customs fees which are...

Got my hands on the KNX EITT today: The official conformance testing suite used by device manufacturers and test labs with the harness and the test definitions. I already had the tests itself without the runner in a version from 2019 and which are part of the standard documents in PDF form. This is what I reimplemented with my own runner to already test the stack with patches applied to tests here and there because of reasons. How I got this today is a story over a beer at $conference. I don...

Thank you, Linux. By enabling this handler to emulate a pre-ARMv6 SWP{B} instruction, I can run my old armv5 binaries on a modern aarch64 system, but even with the rate limit, you are hammering my logs with this message. Who thought this would be a good idea? I cannot recompile these binaries, because I don't have the source code... It took a Fable session to find out what even happens, because before enabling that by writing 1 into /proc/sys/abi/swp everything would just get killed with a...

As promised, I just made my KNX device stack public: https://github.com/ntrnnr/zweidraehte It's still not 100% done, but you can create TP1, IP and RF devices with and without KNX Data Secure. ETS product database generation is also included. I'll keep working on it! But now you can play around with it as well.
