I present a brave face. But because I lost my job, part of me is utterly terrified. I have written before that I'm a smashed-together collection of multiple personalities. One of them is about eight years old. He's the personality most sensitive to cilantro ("SOAP IN FOOD!"). And he's my pickiest eater. Even though I grew up in a very racist home and went to a racist school, I'm glad that few parts of that racism took hold in me. (Most of Los Angeles is a miserable p...

I am at the Culver City Pride Ride, possibly the smallest Pride celebration I've seen. It's about 50-70 bicyclists taking an hour long ride through Culver City to Culver City Pride. But it's a fun, light ride with good people.

If you're in the United States, what are you doing on July 4th?

For the very first time, I cooked hash browns completely from scratch. I learned two secrets: After I cut the potato into cubes, put it in the microwave for 4 minutes. That softens the potato, making it ready to fry.The secret spice for hash browns is paprika. Use lots.I will definitely cook this again! #cooking

I am a fan of Culinary Class War on Netflix. And I've occasionally gotten Eli to watch it. One of the judges is Chef Paik Jong-Won. Eli has never had his food. I'm bringing home some. (Chef Paik runs chains of restaurants in Korea, with branches in the US. One of them is in Los Angeles' Koreatown.)

Hello from #CyclaVia in Los Angeles! This time, LA shut down Santa Monica Boulevard for cyclists, skaters, skateboarders, and walkers to enjoy. I am at a farmers market; just had a quick breakfast of a popular. Eli drank a kefir. We're off for more adventures!

Emergency! You need to get everyone off of the dance floor! What song do you play?

Too many people mistake personal preferences for universal truths. I just read a fascist statement that cultures can be ranked. Believe it or not, that doesn't bother me at all. At my level of knowledge and ignorance, I rank cultures that build cities above those that don't. (This is one, among many, reasons why I adore México. They built cities larger than Europe's cities, in a land without iron. I suspect I would adore southeast Asia for the same reason.) But I have a huge prob...

People who think that LLMs have solved all the problems of programming also believe that the last 20% of programming are the easiest part.

One coworker -- who I'll call Xavier -- does everything through LLMs. He's the kind of developer that managers who have never been programmers adore: 3000 lines of code per day. I just realized that Xavier cannot read code, even code that he submits for review. He "understands" code by running it against test files and seeing whether results are reasonable. He can only say what the code does, not what causes it to behave in a way. But that has several problems. An obvious fi...
