@SLang @bryanhansel We’ve been in a severe drought for several years now. The Colorado River isn in it’s own drought, the Rockies not getting enough snow, the Sierras haven’t had a deep snow for several years so our water resources aren’t up to the need. I know there has been discussions about building a pipeline to transport water here, so I know it’s not a joke for those of us who are rationing water.

@bryanhansel @SLang Desalination? Are you kidding? Calif has been exploring desalination since at least the 1970s and it hasn’t got any cheaper. It’s terribly expensive and no utility co wants to handle it. Heck we can’t get solar power without utility cos getting a percentage. A pipeline is cheaper. And most of our lawns are either dead or replaced by drought tolerant plants.

@jamesquinnofficial Always. It’s just a matter of motivation. In our culture money seems to be a large motivation. Self improvement is a goal for psychotherapy but the majority of clients seek treatment for relationship problem solving.

@StevenBeschloss Today it’s been reported that Musk is blocking journalists on Twitter who report on him. So much for free speech!

@kairyssdal It might have been enough to cure him of his narcissism.

@kairyssdal It’s easily done. Narcissist wear a very large chip on their shoulder.

@bryanhansel @SLang There may be a few somewhere but I don’t know of any. Certainly not enough to meet the needs of 20 million people. And certainly not in the works around here. It’s always been just talked about not acted on. My cousin worked for a company in San Diego back in the 70s that came to nothing. So, yeah, thought about but never seriously on a scale to meet the needs.

@alapite @nberlat @peter not yet. We will see after 2024. In the meantime we have Elon to keep us on our toes.

@realitythreek @nberlat @peter yup. I left Facebook and moved to Twitter. Mastodon is my next step in my migration. Just looking for sanity in all the wrong places. Mastodon seems pretty good so far. Far fewer people attacking each other. I like how polite and civil people are here.

@JamesWafer228 @btaroli @stevesilberman @actuallyautistic. Elon is hiding behind a diagnosis of Aspergers to deflect criticism. Kind of like substance abusers claiming “I didn't meant the hateful things I said or did, I was drunk”. Being under the influence doesn’t change who you are, it disinhibits, allowing them to act on impulses usually inhibited by social norms. He’s a narcissist.

@JamesWafer228 @btaroli @stevesilberman @actuallyautistic And, furthermore, why do Autistic people “need to be cured”? We all fall somewhere on the spectrum. We all need to learn to accept differences and take responsibility for our prejudices.

@btaroli @actuallyautistic Parents of Autistic children are actual heroes. Ther is no training, no preparation, just learning on the job. My next door neighbor has 3 daughters who are on the spectrum. One severely, one moderately and the 3rd mildly. It’s a wonder to watch the mother (single) do the job on her own. Her patience is phenomenal! I wish you the same and the best in dealing with your family.

@sal Maybe I should rephrase that. Not all parents of autistic children are heroes. Those who were enlightened or are autistic themselves, those who make an effort to understand and nurture their children (that applies to all parents) are heroes. It’s easy to be an asshole. It takes effort not to be.

@simid@neurodifferent.me @btaroli @actuallyautistic My neighbor moved here to Southern California from Hawaii. She said she was astonished at how many social services are available here. She said Hawaii was a great place to live if you didn’t need help but CA has turned her & her children’s lives around. I guess it really does take a village.

@btaroli @actuallyautistic @simid@neurodifferent.me I’m a bit older than you and when I was growing up I never heard of Autism. The autistic children were either known as “retarded” or “the bad kids”. They were relegated to “other” classrooms. This is an example of how we didn't understand the difficulties & differences in people. And, I’m glad we now know more & better.

@majordopolis That’s remarkable! I sure wish the Pacific Northwest had discovered that. Imagine what the Redwoods would be like today if we had taken that path?
